Hi all,
I'm building a Lightning flathead 6 L148, casting number is 645362-3, and serial number is S20656. I believe these engines were only used in the Jeepster. Does anyone know the year it was built, engine color, and if it had an oil filter?
Thank you.

Some were put in a Willys Jeep Station Sedan, as I have recently learned. It was a dressier model of the station wagon ,2wd and only produced in 1948.

So according to my 1950 Motors Manual. The 148 L-head was used in wagons in 48, 49, and 50. It was used in Jeepsters (VJ3-6), in 1949 and 1950.
I can't help you with engine color. This manual doesn't say anything about it.
I also does not list a filter for the oiling system. I know a lot of the early engines did not have filter housings.
Your engine serial number falls into the range of the 1949 model year. Under the listing for Station Wagons.
Numbers for the wagon start at : 13119 and end at 22768
Numbers for the Jeepsters start at : 10001 and end at 10653
I have no reference for your block casting number.
Good luck with your rebuild !

I love old engines and their stories. I sure appreciate your information as to my engine’s origins.
