I have been actively searching for an original engine for the 1951 Truck. I was under the impression that the engine was a L 134 Go Devil. Now I'm told that it may have been a F4-134 Hurricane which was an option. Is there any way of knowing? What are the odds that it was one or the other?

I have what I think is a 1950 Jeep truck with a 4F in it. Looks original to me. It has a column shift and had bucket seats, original I think. It has a flat grille, not pointed. And 4wd. Thee is no evidence that it was a 4L. That's no proof however.
seriously, the 4L is slow as molasses in a truck. I'd sell the motor, but I am on the other pond.

Yeah, Greg, I know that what I am restoring will be a slow beast. I do think that it had the four cylinder with the valve cover, though I need some opinions from guys that have the 51. I have read that the 51 came with the F4-134 but I cannot remember where I read that. I do know that there was an upgrade in 1951 and the only logical progression to me is that F4. I could be wrong.

My 51 has the 4Falso,not sure it is original ,but looks like it could be.

The L4-134 was used in the trucks through early 1950. When the 'new' body style came out in 1950.5 the F4-134 was used. For 1950.5 and 1951 the motor was rated at 73HP and used a mechanical foot starter not a key-start. In 1952, the starter was changed to a key-start and an extra flange was added to the rear of the engine block and the hp rating was raised to 75. I have a complete F4-134 that would be correct for 1950.5 and 1951 that came out of a wagon so I can get some pictures (eventually) if needed.

I would be glad to pay the shipping on a complete 4F. The 4F would be the upgrade engine that I thought was only in the 51. The 4F has a valve cover and the 4L is a flat head. If I had a complete running engine I would be a happy camper.

David, by saying you have a complete F4-134, are you saying you have one for sale or just that you have one. If you have it for sale I'll come and buy it and buy you dinner. I'll buy your whole family including cousins dinner!

Hi Gerald,

For your search, have you tried:

1. ewillys.com: http://www.ewillys.com/category/engine/

or

2a. search tempest.com (using "willys engine" as search terms): http://www.searchtempest.com/search...minAsk=min&maxAsk=max&minYear=min&maxYear=max

2b. search tempest.com (using "willys motor" as search terms): http://www.searchtempest.com/search...asPic=&keytype=adv&minAsk=&maxAsk=&subcat=sss

For search tempest, you can adjust the range (in miles) of the search based on how far you want to drive...

Good luck!

Hadn't thought about selling the engine, I picked it up for a spare in case I ever needed. It came out of a wagon so the front plate is wrong for the pickups, but the plates can be swapped. Here's a picture of it:

OK, So what's it going to take to talk you out of it? If your going to part with it PM me please!!!

I might be willing to sell, but shipping to Washington form Texas would be expensive. I need to check to see if its frozen first, make sure its not a boat anchor. LOL. I had thought about putting it into an old cj5 to use as a ranch vehicle. I see jeeps for sale all the time with there drive train missing.
