Willys Wagon West 2021

It will just make the trip a little better when you finally get to take it.

Edit: Ben, your delay might have been a blessing. It was 28 degrees at my house two nights ago (May 21st). Seems like even summer is getting a late start! I have found out that 50-60 degree weather is perfect for Willy's riding weather. Nothing like going around and emptying all the irrigation pumps at the end of May. Gotta love Wyo!
50-60F is perfect, a little heat, a little chin vent, triangle window and go. Even a little warmer should be better than the warm start I had last year coming up.

Ok. Here is the update as of D Day -5.

The trip will depart in a few weeks. It will be reverse flow of what I posted above. I will follow the usual Oregon trail up and then back through Colorado and across Kansas. As soon as we are done packing the house I will do a short pre trip punch list on the wagon in prep.

More to come.

Alright. The movers have emptied our house out, the septic passed inspection and paperwork signing is Monday. My plan is the leave Friday the 18th in the afternoon and roll for Beatrice, NE. The next day I will zig and zag over to 2 and cross Nebraska for Lusk Wyoming or something generally like that. From there we will work over to Cody and YNP.

I plan to relocate the Willys the the family farm tonight or tomorrow, then Monday night start doing some service work on it for the trip. The highlights are:
New oil filter housing
Oil and filter
Oil the speedo and cable
Lube the door hinges
Clean it out
pack
Install WunderWillys Super Dizzy adapter
Set the points and timing
Marvel at that shiny new adapter
And we will see what else comes up.

@Pete - if you still want to meet up in the park somewhere let me know a day. I plan to be out that way for a week. Heading home the following Friday. Traffic in the park has been heavy - hitting pre covid highs - so I understand if not.

After all the stress and fun of the last 5 months this trip is going to be laid back. Cigar and pipe tobacco will be consumed. I will be debt free, house free and the family will be safely tucked away in Europe.

More to come, looking forward to listening to the transfer case whine.

Long time "improvement" finally happening:

We signed the closing paperwork on the sale of our house today, the money has cleared and we are now officially homeless. It was 95F out this afternoon so not much got done. I will do a little bit each night to get ready for the trip. Four days away.

More to come:

Hey Ben, I know how you like the old trails and was thinking today how you’d enjoy it out here. My wife and I are celebrating our anniversary with some exploring in Nevada this week. We’re not as tough as you, left the Willys at home this time for the comfort of air conditioning and modern suspension. Have a great trip.

Don’t you have the choke and light locations swapped? Looking good for it’s always in the details

I like the weight on that signpost, that probably 60 lbs of steel.

Ben,
I don't think I'll be able to get away from work, unfortunately. I've done several jeep trips already this year, and will be making a trip or two to Oregon to help Joseph relocate in July, so I'm tapped out.
Looking forward to your trip updates, nothing like an epic Willys road trip!
Pete

No worries Pete - I understand. I am at the bleeding edge with all the moves and home sales. More updates to come.

Tonights pretrip update:

Some time back I found a NOS Fram F30 filter housing especially for the Super Hurricane. It gives you extreme oil filgration due to the large low micron filter and huge oil capacity that allows the oil to slow way down in the filter housing and allow the crap to settle out. To install it you have to drain the coolant and pull a head bolt. Yay!

You can see the bracket here. Besides the stock S.H. oil filter mounting points the single headbolt point is utilized to help with vibration for all that mass up in the air.

Off with the universal mount Fram F4 housing. The F4 is half the filter size and oil volume of the F30 unit. In the fram world the housing is an F the filter cartridge is a C so a C4 filter fits an F4 housing and so on.

Then on with the new F30 Super Hurricane specific housing.

This housing adds an additional quart of oil to the already accounted for extra almost quart of oil. That extra oil and larger filter/chamber help keep the oil cleaner, longer. Win win.

More to come. The trip is getting closer.

The question is... with this new oil filter and capacity does the master of maintenance still change oil at traditional scheduled times or does he push it a little? Seriously though, it is a cool setup. What is the little black canister with a red label, mounted to the firewall?

Of course - oil is cheap - machine shops are not! On trips the filter will get changed every other other oil change.

The black canister on the firewall with red label is a remote brake fluid reservoir. Someone was selling them on the forum some time ago. It plumbs into a nipple on the master cylinder and makes it way easier to check brake fluid level.

Someday I would like to build a cj2a or army jeep and do many of the trails start to finish. Maybe once the whole house thing is figured out I will start looking. An early cj with the tool dents would be nice. I could easily blow a bunch of time wandering. I will be on and off the Pony Express trail Friday. It always feels good heading west.

Jim/@61zep came up with that remote reservoir kit.

He's still selling them on ebay.
Search for "EZ Fill Remote Brake Fluid Reservoir Ford 1939-51 Car & 1939-56 Truck"

Check your master cylinder cap diameter against what's listed in the product description, but the text includes:
"Allard, Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Dodge, Plymouth, Desoto, Chrysler, Ford, Lincoln, Studebaker, LaSalle, Hudson, Kaiser, Henry J, Jeep"

Contact Jim if you need a different diameter.

I’m running one of these for the epic adventure coming up, it seeps and leaks a bit from the replacement cap but otherwise nice product
