Ross steering gear box rebuild - bushings

Over the weekend I was lubing the wagon after the recent trip and decided to open the Ross steering box — it had been a few years. When I removed the lower-most bolt, a couple of tablespoons of water came out. For whatever reason, these boxes seem to collect water.

I suspect the water got there last June during the Run for the Hills when we did a fairly deep creek crossing.

The boxes are designed such that a little water doesn’t really hurt, it just rests below the oil in the bottom of the box. Still, it isn’t good to have it in there long term.

Here’s @Inferno making that crossing.

And that was after a drought. Imagine that crossing now?

I just went through this a few weeks ago. Bought a new sector shaft , put it in, couldnt get it to go in far enough , splines just werent right on the new one, took everything back out, new ross gasket cleaned up my original shaft and went with it. Better to get that original back in shape at a machine shop if possible and put it back. Ive learned the hard way over the 7 years Ive been working on my truck, original or NOS is the only way to go if possible.

I've got a 1" sector shaft I got from Walcks a year or so ago, if anyone needs it. Turned out mine was fine, the slop in my steering was several bolts missing and the rest loose. I think it was about the last one left in thr Country at the time, as Carl didn't have anymore, and that size is hard to get. Have thought about keeping it as a spare, but if anyone needs it, I'd probably turn loose of it

I'm looking for a sector shaft for my 1960 pickup. Do you still have one you're willing to part with?

Yes..Still have it..probably would part with it. Let me see what I paid for it, and will get back to you tomorrow morning, of that's ok?

What year is your truck? And what size do you need? Mine is the bigger 1" one, and got from Carl at Walcks. I paid a little over $100 for it, but would sell for $100 just to get my money out of it. Willys America has them for between $75 - 78. I would sell you mine if you want it, but does have slight pitting on shaft, and one of the nipples. Way it came from Carl..I called and complained about it, after paying a premium price, but he said there were no more to be had, and was last one he had. I was just going to keep it as a backup. Have enclosed pics of mine, so you can see, and if you want it, will sell to you, but always try and help someone find a part cheaper if I can. Let me know.

I recently purchased a new sector shaft for my 58 truck. Willys America was the only vendor I found that had it in stock. It was in good shape when delivered and fit correctly. ymmv.
