It was an unseasonably cool and pleasant day in the foothills, for August, meaning it was in the low 80s, with a nice “delta breeze” bringing cool air inland from the Pacific Ocean.

Such days are rare in August, so I took the chance to take the wagon for a drive, and chose a 4WD route through the canyon of the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River, crossing it from north to south. Usually this road, exposed as it is to the afternoon sun, is hotter than the hinges of hell this time of year, but today it was perfect.

This is a county road, but they have not maintained it for a couple of decades. It’s often impassable in winter due to mud and washouts. Today it was very rough with big ruts, but enough people had passed over it since the rains to smooth out the ruts a little bit. Nevertheless, there were several occasions when I had a tire airborne as I traversed them. It felt a bit like playing Twister, and the old wagon body creaked and groaned. Sadly, I was too lazy to get out and take pictures of the most dramatic moments, and my phone battery was nearly dead and I’d neglected to bring a cord, so I didn’t want to dilly-dally.
