Hello All, I am changing valve guides on a 226 in my truck and I have removed two of them but they broke during removal. I got them out ok though. I tried two different ways . First I put a long allthread through the guide and put a washer and nut on each end trying to pull them out and the allthread breaks. I then threaded the valve guide it self an used a grade 8 boldt and it breaks the valve guide in half. I am fearful that the new ones will break when I put them in. They seem to be bridle. The engine is still in the truck. Does anone have tip on removing and installing valve guide while the engine is still in the truck.

Walcks had a video showing how to do this on an F or L head. Same concept could be applied to 226. The video was on Walcks blog, but I can't seem to get to it right now.

When you install the guides freeze them first. It will reduce there diameter by 1 or 2 thousand.

Thanks Buzz, Joe and Nick. This is exactly what I needed to know. I will pick up some fine threaded rod and try it out. Also going to try and freez the guide before installing them. Thanks for the tips. I will follow up later in the week to let you know how it goes.

All thread can be purchased in different grade just like bolts. If you are getting it at a hardware store it is likely a grade 2 product. Locate a good industrial nut and bolt supplier and buy at least a grade 5 all thread. Good Luck
