OK, the fun begins with a ‘56 CJ5

Here is a question I've been searching for and not found a real answer to. What was the original color of a 55-56 CJ5's dashboard? I've read that they were black but were they gloss or matte black (if they were indeed black at all)? My window frame is a matte or flat black and I have seen some photo's showing a black dash but the majority of resto's are painted the color of the repainted tub. Looks nice and I'm still struggling with electrical things for now. I figured that if anyone would know, it would be here. So far any questions I've had have had the best info here. I'm getting retinal damage from searching for this answer and could possibly lose my vision before I can put it back out for a drive and that would suck royally.

Wow, you have some mad fabrication skills. I'm more than likely going to just run mine as is when I sort out the electrics. The interior of mine got Hot Rod black, the dash is the same color as the outside of the body, orange. The underside says it was originally dark blue, almost the same color as my 66 Sport Fury. The window frame seems to have been black and I'll leave it. Getting ready to pull the dash and read somewhere that they were black so I figured I'd ask whether it was flat or glossy but I'm thinking the dash was actually the same as the exterior. I see too many painted that way. Hard to pick a direction just yet. I have to put a few miles on it because mechanicals are more important to me than looks. I just figured I'd ask before I yanked it.

Have fun with your project Bill. Paint it whatever color you want.

Hello Bill,
I have a 1955 CJ-5, but sold and registered in 1956. Serial number reflects it is a 1955, must have sat in a car lot for a year before being sold. Currently up on jack stands.

I like those optional steel wheels, any chance would you willing to sell for stock ones?

My CJ-5 is modified with a SBC 350V8, Body lift, etc. Soon to be modified with a Chevy SM-420 4 speed Transmission, adapter to the original Dana 18 T/Case, Warn O/D, Rear Locker in a flanged axle Dana 44 with 5.38:1 axle ratio.20190720_134037.jpg

Nice. I came to the conclusion that those wheels on mine aren't DOT and are more than likely just utility wheels. My Jeep apparently spent nearly it's entire life in Bakersfield and did duty as a farm vehicle. I'm only guessing, but I am very familiar with the kind of repairs/modifications done on a farm. No offense to any farmers out there. They do some ingenious repairs with whatever they have at hand, but fit and finish isn't in the plan. You can probably get those at any TSC store.

I am very sorry it took me so long to answer, but I had a few setbacks, my family visiting and installed a Bestop on the Jeep. The wheels that were on my CJ are not DOT and I suspect that they are implement wheels. But, if anyone wants them they can come and get 'em. They are just taking up space. Just noticed, same top on mine, only black.
