This is kind of a "if it fits, it ships (drives) question.

I have a 1956 PU, 4x4, 226 L6 and I have a spare freshly rebuilt tranny from a 1949 with matching engine (in fact it is the trannies matching engine), so the question is does the tranny to frame cross member fit the 56 (49 to 56, I can drive new holes if need be)?

I have the bell housing from these previously mated items, I will replace the release bearing with a new one and have the flywheel resurfaced (ground true) and put a new pilot bearing in the crank. Am I forgetting something? I have a tranny jack, too.

I appreciate any and all help and I will takes photos for other and future newbies like me.

I don't know about the fit of the earlier cross-member, but it's not difficult to drill a few new holes if necessary.

A couple of concerns come to mind:

1 make sure your engine mounts are fresh - holding the engine in the correct place.
2 check your clutch mechanism. If it's worn and as sloppy as mine, at least take the opportunity to weld up the oval holes and make them round again. Of course, you can buy new parts from Walcks or Kaiser Willys.

Cheers,

Pavel

49's didn't have a 226 engine. The 226 engines you speak of were Continental engines and used by Kaiser in trucks and wagons starting in 54. The same engine was also used in tractors and bull dozers etc. The crossmember from 49 should be the same just make sure the transmission input shaft is the same and you're good to go. Willys built engines had a smaller transmission input shaft.

Pavel, thanks for your thoughts. Yea, I hope for alignment but as you said if not thats why they invented drills (with new bits). I have all new clutch pieces and I have in a box new replacement studs (I think that is what those balls are called. New disk, new matched pres plate to the disk and as I said the flywheel will be trued.

I will support the back of the engine so as not to damage the fron motor mounts and the tranny has new (2 months of wear) mounts they are still pliable. I will closely look at the U joints for both axles and U joints on the front PTO. Yes, I will clean and paint the new tranny (black is a period correct color, yes? (Semi gloss black.)

The guy I bought this PU from doesn't have or can't find the scupper for the overdrive unit from www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com
, so I'm hoping "Herm" has one to sell.

I appreciate all your advice and anyone elses input.
