Where was your Willys today?

definitely, not a street queen. Would love to see one of theses new Jeep pickups with something loaded in the back. Nice rig

Okay, I know it's not a WIllys. I might take some heat for this. But Lookout Ranch ask about the section of the old Lincoln Hwy and Hwy 40 Over Donner Summit. My Willy's is down at the moment, waiting for a new starter so I took the 1955 Olds Supper 88 Holiday for a cruise.
Olds Hwy40 trip 003.jpgOlds Hwy40 trip 004.jpgOlds Hwy40 trip 006.jpgOlds Hwy40 trip 007.jpgIt's freeway From Baxter to Cisco Grove before you can get back onto the Old Hwy. I stopped at Nyack where Old Man Stewart Wells cut up his old Gas Station on Hwy 40 and moved it to the new location when the Freeway By-Passed him in 1960 Next stop is Cisco Grove to get back to the Old Hwy.That is where the 4x4 trails start for Red Mtn, and Lola Montez Lake.https://www.oldwillysforum.com/foru...s-your-willys-today.1846/page-152#post-177613 From Cisco Grove the Hwy follows the South Fork of the Yuba River all the way to it's head waters at Lake Van Norden and Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. Rainbow lodge is right on the river, about 100 Yards upstream from the footings of the old Lincoln Hwy Bridge, there is a photo on the wall in the lodge of a Model T Ford crossing the river on cable zip line after the bridge failed.. Herstell Jones Built the Rock lodge and several other rock structures during the 30's and 40's I repaired the fountain in the early 90's after 60 years of freeze and thaw and snow plows crashing into it. I removing a bad mortar repair and found Herstel's signature and the date 1932. I did my repairs around it and left his name exposed. On top at Soda Springs is the Donner Summit Historical Society Museum and several Ski Resorts. There is an interesting story about Mount Juda, During the wagon train era they built a rope and log windlass on the Mtn, and walked the Oxen down the mountain while pulling the wagons up. Beyond Donner Ski Ranch the Road continues down to the Donner Summit Bridge, RxR tunnels and Donner Lake at Truckee. At Donner Ski Ranch the melt water run off becomes the Truckee River, which is also fed from Lake Tahoe.
On the way back I stopped in Alta at one of the RXR overpasses that mysteriously has four 6+ ft in diameter Redwood/(Sequoias) trees, one on each corner. There is a Rumor, that Towle Brothers Logging planted them, after they logged the entire Grove at Cisco Grove. The only other Redwoods / Sequoias locally are between Forest Hill and French Meadows. http://www.redwoodhikes.com/Placer/Placer.html. Here is a link to a satellite map of the area, Hampshire Rocks Rd and Donner Pass Rd, are both Old 40 winding along the Yuba River and under the Interstate 80 overpasses .https://satellites.pro/Cisco_Grove_map#39.318906,-120.546831,17

So many times I've driven 80 to Tahoe or Reno and seen the Nyack exit and even occasionally stopped for fuel. The next time I drive over the summit I gotta plan for a day exploring. Thanks for the inspiration Mr 7th Cav.
