The Dave Whitcomb 1948 Willys Jeep

Still cobbing away on the old heap...

Richard Petty fans...take a look at this piece...no more cobbled up snorkel air filter...we went racing with a K&N reusable air filter...

You know you are working on an old Jeep when you have a metal can full of OEM Willys Jeep rust...

Working on the drivers side...

I am still in process with this side...doing the brake line shuffle for the bottom edge here...

This is my favorite part of rebuilding old vehicles...
Once all the cutting the fitting and welding is done...I get bored...

This old heap was an old Sunoco gas station Jeep back in the late 1950s and 1960s and probably later than that too...

I found on redbubble...almost looks like it belongs on the old man...

Anybody wanna buy the old guy when I get him to run and stop?

I had several of those, and re-started new one along with a pile/stack behind the barn. I do share your observations!

Just the opposite here. Mine are typically so far gone that I question my sanity. Yes, there's a feeling of accomlishment, but at what value? Maybe if I were a little better at it and could do it in less time I would feel differently. I don't buy repro panels, as I make my own, but I have resorted to buying hat-channel. As a result I appreciate that you enjoy this part even more.

I really enjoy making sparks and saving old tin work...

My biggest deal is I don't enjoy driving any of these old heaps around where I live...

The traffic is stupid fast and no one cares about a 1948 Willys Jeep or for that matter anything that is not fuel injected...

So I will get the old heap to run and stop and and sell it...hoping to be able to break even on this one....

I really wanted a old VW bug but this thing popped up and he said he would deliver it...I could not go wrong...keeps me busy too...

Thanks for the reply...

So the old man went from outside MASH hospital to the warm and dry operating room for further surgery...

IMG_20240430_144425913.jpg

The old guy only came with one tailgate hinge pin...keeping with the old gas station theme...I found a 1/2" or 5/8" rusty bolt to fill the bill for now...

then things got crazy...the neighbors gave me a metal baby gate...so I did this thing here to it....

IMG_20240501_104918367.jpg

I was really torn as to putting the old tool box seat riser back in the old man...but then I came up with this concoction...

IMG_20240501_155511777.jpg

Almost looks like belongs there...and it does but it is a façade...the new tubing is under this with 2 legs cut and fit for support on the front...

IMG_20240501_152817199.jpg

So I am applying for two old Willys patents...one for the removable seat riser and the other is the hat channel lubrication access hole...

I am going be rich for sure...

IMG_20240501_162342309.jpg

I also welded all the screw holes up too...so this old woodchuck is not as much of a wood chuck as all thought I was...the hat channels are now permanently welded to the new floor pans...on the passenger side at least...

Tac tac tac...grind grind grind...repeat...

I try and work on this heap every single day...but the other day I got probably 4 hours out in the operating room...

That panel on the outside of the cowl support...done...

IMG_20240506_115532684.jpg
That overlap area under where the door opening is located...done...

IMG_20240506_134908923.jpg

And finally that pesky bottom lip on the tub...done...

got a couple hours in over the weekend too...

IMG_20240504_155335006.jpg
before old 6 volt stuff...

IMG_20240505_122242200.jpg
Nice new shiny 12 volt stuff...

Tac tac tac...grind grind grind...repeat...

And another hit off the crack pipe for me...

Love saving old rusty metal...makes me smile

I am determined to not pull this heap any farther apart than I have to...the bottom of the half cab and the top of the ole steel tub...well there were issues for sure...

IMG_20240507_150326161.jpg
Not sure but I think this is what you call toasted...

IMG_20240507_085638135.jpg
tac tac tac...grind grind grind...

IMG_20240507_173955676.jpg
A little rough around the edges...but this ole Sunoco gas station jeep is just a little rough...

IMG_20240507_174759922.jpg
Look mom....grind grind grind grind....
A little bit of vinegar to make everything blend in together...

Dave Whitcomb surgery went well today...started doing brakes today...the first box of Ron Fitzpatrick brake parts showed up....

Not a fan of doing brake work...
