Resurrecting the old M38A1

I bolted on some items after Randy left.

We mocked up the gas tank.

The go pedal was installed when I bolted in the floors.

And accompanying linkage.

Lookit that convoluted linkage.

Driver seat frame and other parts are curing in the sun.

Hood has a low spot in the middle. See the gap under the level?
20240503_114959.jpg

So I sanded it in preparation for heat shrinking.

Next parts to attach will be back seat hardware.

That's all folks.

Gotta ask: how did you tighten the bolts on the dash without marring the beautiful paint? Velvet-lined socket set?
Firstly, I do scratch bolts occasionally. But for those occasions when I do not, that is due to one or more of factors;
- media blasting the bolt head for maximum paint adhesion
- epoxy primer and hardener added to the tan enamel
- gently tightening the bolt
- using six point instead of 12 point tools
- know when is tight enough instead of cranking on it like a head bolt

There are plastic lined sockets but I have not found them recently.

Hey Joe. I have a bunch of rubber grommets of different sizes. Be happy to drop them off in the mail if you could use them. If interested let me know the outer and inner sizes.

Super generous Jim.
Randy bought a grommet kit. I do not know the grommet sizes.
Thank you for offering.

As Randy's last visit is next week, I got some work done.

I placed the painted driver's seat in place. No bolts as the frame must come out when R returns with gas tank gaskets.
20240503_180807.jpg

I painted the air cleaner assembly with Dupli Color engine black.
20240503_180959.jpg

And mounted it.
20240505_143147.jpg

Rear seat bracketry was bolted in. For faithful readers, I went thru Heck and back to salvage those brackets from the Rot a1 and weld them into this tub.
20240504_163628.jpg

20240504_163638.jpg

Mounted the side mirror bracket or arm.
20240504_164723.jpg

I installed my lawn and tractor battery. Now R is planning to buy two new batteries, so he won't need to borrow my battery. And yes, I did clean the top. It's just extra doity.
20240505_144356.jpg

I installed the painted radiator. I used Ospho on the steel side brackets. Then I wire brushed everything and rinsed the whole schmear down. I ran out of the Dupli Color so I think this is Fusion satin or matte black.

I performed some heat shrinking on that hood as well.
20240507_161131.jpg

It's better. I by no means am ready for custom car work but the heat shrinking took a lot of oil canning out of the middle.
20240507_095348.jpg

This was also a dent that oil canned.
20240507_161137.jpg

After heat.
20240507_161140.jpg

That's all so far. Work will recommence next week. On Thursday, Randy tows the Jeep home.

I bought a pair of Dana Spicer u-joints. Nice to see made in USA.
20240508_110028.jpg

Randy bought Crown u-joints. More surprising not made in China.

Randy checking the fit of the driver's seat.
20240514_135142.jpg

We used some fuel filler hose to connect the carb to air cleaner. Later, R will buy the correct hose.
20240514_143729.jpg

R brought a pair of batteries. The small wire was for checking for shorts.
20240514_143739.jpg

You can see the fuel line snaking up the side of the tank.
20240514_143745.jpg

And R cleaned, painted and installed the exhaust system.

Some videos for your entertainment.

Starting the engine using a squirt can to supply fuel. Plus, the foot operated starter switch was malfunctioning. So total Hillbilly start.

Running the engine with an electric fuel pump because the mechanical pump refused to suck and blow.
As you will see and hear, I could not shift into gear.
You will also see from the ammeter that the charging system was working. Amazing considering how many years the parts have been nonfunctional.

Randy had me push the Jeep out of the garage. Then he drove with the clutch pedal depressed and shocked the clutch disc with the throttle. The clutch eventually relented. We figure the steam cleaning might have rusted the disc to the flywheel.
