I acquired a ‘62 panel from a friend by simply towing it out of his yard. It has the 230 Tornado, served as a military vehicle in Utah, then as a surplus vehicle in Washington State. Don't know of its private ownership, but it's mostly intact and mostly rust-free. But she's definitely been used sporting some love taps in several locations.

I'm mechanically declined, but what a great vehicle to learn on. Plan is to research the motor to see if it needs a swap. If I can get it running around the block, I'm thinking that'll be good enough.

Few pics from dragging it off the donors property. A free truck is a great start IMG_20240417_100351118.jpg

Curious what the black-and-gold glove box data plate looks like. Here are a few great threads on the Tornado if you haven't found them already:
Here is some tech info from the library to add to the great points above:

It is a 4x4 Audio Visual Aid "AVA" vehicle. Observe evidence of a roof rack (weld spots above roof drip rail) and maybe a second fuel tank to feed a 120 volt generator on the left rear quarter. The "7" in the 54078 designated the 230 OHC.

Welcome and WOW, what a score! I would have paid dearly for that, it's tough finding a 230 panel in 4wd. And if it has the military version of the Tornado you're a leg up on stuff like better motor mounts, etc. And I can say from experience that a 230 makes a great driver, I've had a chance behind the wheel of one and it comes damclose to the feel of my 350 SBC.
You've already got a Glad with the "Willys" trim, complete with an angry birds grille; save the mods for that and keep the real Willys as origianal as you can, you're in a special club with that one! Lucky guy...

I don't think the Military 230 OHC came out till 1967 ? So the 230 is likely the civilian model.

I also love the factory Tow hooks.

I tried to narrow down the year but I'm in El Dorado Hills for a few days and the data is in Ohio...
