Hello Pete,
I really appreciate this forum and your good work. Recently, an ad for Northern Gateway Pipelines has shown up in the threads. This is the single largest issue facing people up here in BC and pits us against the enormous weight and power of big business and our Federal Government. How much does it cost to place an ad with your forum and how is the process done?

Thanks

Pavel

Pavel-

The ads you are seeing are Google Ads, and are not placed by paid advertisers directly to the forum. Corporations like Northern Gateway are paying Google for the ad space.

The benefit to the forum to having Google Ads, is that when the same ad displays many times (1000 impressions), or is clicked upon, Google sends a few cents to OWF. The more clicks, or impressions, the more pennies show up here. It's not much, but it does help pay for the hosting package over time.

As I understand it, the ads are part geographically driven, as well as forum content driven. The ads you are seeing are likely not displayed to other users, say in Utah. I'm guessing you are getting the pipeline ads due to your IP geographic location.

There is a way to block certain types of ads from displaying all together though, which I can look into. I'll check it out and post what I find here.

Sooooooo, If ALL members took just ten minutes a week to click on all the Google Ads on OWF, then the OWF Coffers will see more action and more $$... Sounds like an easy way to get the cash flowing from the Giant Corporate Machine into our Great Forum. What do you all think of that? Let's DO IT! Pivnic

I just spent a few minutes crawling through the Google Ads setup. I have disabled a few categories of ads that fall into the discouraged topics on the forum...

I don't know whether to thank you or not... My question was not designed to censor, in any way, ads coming from big corporations or from anyone else. I'm ignorant of how these Google adverts work. My thought was to counter the Northern Gateway ads with something that would persuade in the opposite direction. Obviously that would be difficult and probably more expensive than my wallet could support.

I may have opened a can-of-worms here and do not want to cause your forum or you, unnecessary trouble... perhaps let it go...

Cheers and Merry Christmas

Pavel-

As part of the Google ads setup, I have to choose what type of ads I want to display. I had already removed all the penis enlargement (all Willys owners are well hung, right?), viagra, body piercing, etc ads from Google. As per part of my policy of no religion, political, porn, etc, I don't see the need for ads that fall into these categories either.

No worries, it's all good...

Pete
