I've been looking for an paper filter air cleaner housing for the Carter 1 barrel carb, and haven't found anything that isn't tiny or ridiculously expensive, or requires a center stud to hold it on...

Wondering what you all have found that works.

Something inexpensive like this would be fine...

we used one very similar to that. probably a bit closer to the one in the link below. now it was to big to fit the carb. so we took a piece of threaded coupling that was the right size. cut it down to about 3/4 in tall and and put it around the top of the carb. then the air cleaner went around that . i will try to remember to get some pics tonight. i plan on playing around with the pickup anyway. i mean it has been almost a year since i touched it, so its about time.

Bryce-
I looked at that one from Summit, and can't tell from the description if it is a band clamp type or if it needs the center threaded rod as part of the carb to hold it on...

O'brien Truckers makes a $35 cast aluminum base for a 6" diameter filter, that fits the 2 5/16" carb throat. It has a cross bar with threaded hole in it to hold the top and filter to the carb.
It doesn't come with the filter or a top though...

You can get a complete assembly from them for $115, if you want the finned aluminum look and want to spend the $$...

I suppose one could use this base, and make something for the top.

Also, Speedway motors sells a spacer ring to adapt the 2 5/16" carb to the more common 2 5/8" air filter housings: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Small...er-Ring-2-5-16-Inch-to-2-5-8-Inch,139472.html

i will get a pic tonight and post it tomorrow. i believe there was a band clamp that held it on.

I used a small Cal Custom air cleaner (CAL-187147) until I swapped to a Holley 2300. I think I paid about $15 for it. It may be small (4"), but it sure looks cool and it's cheap. I can confirm that it has its own provision for the center threaded rod. There's a plate that goes across the base of the carburetor that it mounts to. Any air filter for a 2" or 2 5/8" neck will have a provision for the rod that holds the air filter together, since none of the carburetors with that size neck have them that I've ever seen.

well that worked. i am having trouble uploading photos...

now we're cooking with gas.

how do i rotate these things again?

Bryce- That looks like it would work for me, but I'd like to find one that fits without modifications.

I bought this one yesterday at the local O'Rielly parts place. I was hoping it would work for now, since I'm not sure how long I will keep the Carter carb.

The problem is that the neck on the bottom isn't long enough to set the assembly above the manual choke lever. Not sure how the cheap plastic spacer would keep out any dirt either...
Taking it back this afternoon for a refund.

I emailed Dennis from O'Brien Truckers about his air cleaners, to see if they will bit the Carter as well as clear the manual choke linkage. If they will work, I might just spring for one of these:

By the time I screw around with a 30 dollar cheap china made filter, adapter rings and spacers, I'll be at just about the same cost.

I use one like the first picture but my problem is the hood hits the wingnut when I close it.
the filter element is just a little to tall.

I ordered this inexpensive air cleaner and adapter ring today, from Speedway. I decided I didn't want to spend the $$$ for a decent Edmunds style filter at this point, since I'm not sure if I am going to eventually go back to the Weber carb or not. I want to put some miles on the Carter first, then decide.

The adapter ring adapts the 2 5/16" diameter of the carb throat to the more common 2 5/8" air filter base. This filter is still small, but it looks like from the picture that it will clear the manual choke linkage on the Carter.

Here is my take on an air cleaner. Put your hand over the carb. while engine running. Should suck a finger in and bog down some. Put the little one on and wrap your hands around the element. It shouldn't bog the engine down. It it does it is to small.
