Willys pickup campers?

hi all,

i have started shopping around for a canned ham camper, but have come across some vintage slide in truck campers.

has anyone used a slide in camper on their willys? or towed a small canned ham camper?

A neighbor of mine in the 70's had a full sized 8' camper with roof overhang in a Willys pickup. He had to widen the pickup bed a little bit, used it on Cape Cod. Had a 283 in it, otherwise stock. Kinda hung off the back a little too much but he didn't care. I'll ask his son if there are any pictures out there. diggerG

My grand father had a 13 or 14 ft travel trailer he would pull around from logging camps he worked in I think he started doing that about ten years after the Alaska HWY job was finished last time I had seen it was in about 1972. I think his willys was a 56 or 57 P/U got photo of it some where I have a 1968 Scotty 13 ft trailer but haven't yet towed with my truck It' can be done , start and stop times will change for sure, Summer is just around the corner. i would like a camper that i can stand up in, thinking of a 10' to 14' trailer

something like one of these little guys.

i have also seen a few of the old ALASKA campers, they are a hard walled pop up truck camper. i wonder how it would fit

I've been looking at doing a vintage camper on my 1948 truck. After perusing Craigslist and the internet for a couple of years, I'm convinced that it may be easier to build a "vintage" replica.

Here is what I came up with as a minimalist camper:

Even though some of our trucks are rated as "One-Ton" trucks, Id be hesitant to put and 600-800lb unit that high up on the center of gravity.

As cool as some of the vintage campers and camper shells are, be very careful of buying one with mold. Once mold is established, it is nearly impossible to remove, and mold loves old campers, particularly with wood paneling. I had a trailer that everytime I went camping I got sick. Sold it and never got sick camping again.
 
One thing you will have trouble with is the same thing Jeep owners had to deal with clear up through the end of the J series pickups. And that's the non std bed. If I remember correctly a std pickup bed will be 49" between the wheel wells. While a Willys Pickup is only 45" So no slide in camper made for anything but a Willys will fit as they are typically 48" wide in the floor.

You might do well to research DIY campers and build your own to fit. Using modern foam board insulation and an aluminum frame you could build a pretty light weight camper.

I'm planning on the same thing to build a strong but light wt. Hard top for my CJ2A

I have a Coleman stove just like the one in the picture.
 
My wife and I love camping, and have been looking at many options for a camper. We have a nice cedar strip canoe we will carry with racks on the truck, so thinking a pull behind camper for us. Trying to contact these guys, says there not taking anymore orders, but maybe can coerce them. We want a cedar camper, as will match our canoe, and is just so darn nice looking
