Has anyone ever done a small diesel engine swap. I have a 61 wagon and have been looking for a diesel engine to throw into it, any suggestions?

Cummins has a new crate motor 2.8 diesel. See 4Wheel and Off Road magazine web site for info. It sounds like a pretty good engine, but a little spendy, depending on your budget.

There's a supplier for Kubota diesels. Here's a video:

The ALH series VW TDI would make a nice swap into an early CJ. For a wagon something like a Mercedes OM617 would be more reasonable. The Cummins 4BT or Isuzu 4BD1T would also be a great choice if geared properly.

I've done a VW swap into a Samurai - quite a bit lighter, but it was 1.6NA. Being in Canada, you have access to 1.9 turbo diesels. That might be a decent option, but it might be a little light still. In a Samurai, it is unbelievable power.

I haven't purchased my wagon yet, but I'm looking for something to put the new Cummins in and I'm on the cusp of a deal on a 56 wagon.

You've got me thinking about the VW diesel now - but it wouldn't be enough to tow my trailer.

2.0 VW Turbo Diesel, 140 H/P and 236 ft. pds. of torque. Not exactly a beast of an engine. If I am going to do an engine swap, I would swap in a little fun !
