The sound of a 1951 CJ-3A Go Devil

I didn't think of that. Great suggestion will do this weekend. I still have to pull the cover off the bell housing to snap photos of that too.
To my ears, it sounds as though it might be a lifter?

One thing I saw online is that it could be the PCV valve...guy had a ticking noise he couldn't pin down...so worth checking that also.

I like the idea of removing the fan belt (to eliminate water pump and alternator) and the mechanic stethoscope (I've used one quite often--very handy and worth picking up if you don't have one). Pull the PCV valve (plug the hole in to the carb) to eliminate that for a short time. And then I'd go to a valve adjustment...

I have seen the same video on the PCV. A British guy is promoting cleaning that out. Mine was pretty bad when I got to it. Took it apart and cleaned it. Had to replace the spring inside the housing. Now it's clean after an oil flush, replacement filter, fresh oil and running some Mystery Oil through it along with the zinc additive.

My engine has a tick that is a little louder than the other sounds. After much poking around I finally attributed to the oil pump bypass. Right or wrong it's been running fine for 10 plus years since the rebuild.

What has been your longest drive and what average speed have you driven on that clicking?

I'll be driving from NY to FL on this jeep so I am replacing worn parts and repairing previous abuse.

Absolutely. You are doing the right thing.

I don't go far, but I go frequently in the summer.

When we were kids we would jump in the jeep and go for hours in the Nevada hills and never give it a thought. No cell phone, no AAA....just go. Things change.

I hear ya. I wouldn't dare make the trip now without a Cell phone and AAA. However, I would like to get the jeep in such reliable condition I wouldn't worry about using either unless to call my wife for lack of silence and me being bored with the calm :)

Well, I look forward to hearing about your trip and the adventures you may have.

You will get all these things sorted out. I'm impressed that you have already begun the preparations and not waited till Thanksgiving!!

Maybe a valve adjustment is needed?
If you’re driving NY to Florida and back, you should definitely do a valve adjustment before you go. It’s bound to be more than 1,000 miles one way. You may not have to do a service interval in Florida if you’re leaving NY with everything newly adjusted, greased, and lubed

This is exactly my intention. Get it all done now and not put anything off.

I would like to inspect the oil pressure release valve. How do I know which model of oil pump I have? I e. Is it Early or Late model?

This is the old one, relief valve in the body of the pump. Body is aluminum. Newer pumps have the valve in the bottom cover. I do not know when they changed.

The oil pump drives off the cam and in turn drives the distributor and affects your ignition timing. There is an explanation in the service manual on how to get the pump installed correctly...
