New guy here trying educate myself on the minor differences between models. I know the CJ3A has a little more leg room from the CJ2A. But is there any difference between the CJ3A and CJ3B leg room? Thanks. Steve

I don't think there is any leg room difference between the 3A and the 3B. The cowl was extended up and the hood is taller to allow for the F134 engine.

If you're looking for more leg room some folks have notched the wheel well and lengthened the seat bottom.

Thanks. I've seen some discussions on notching the wheel wells to allow the seat to be moved back, it's a good, if not drastic change if needed. I'm 6'0, about 235 - not huge, but not small either. I think a CJ2A might be a bit tight, but a 3A or 3B would be a better fit. Trying to decide what to look for. Thanks

Gear Grinder,
I also am 6 foot and 225 pounds. I fit fairly well in my 53 CJ3B. When I repaired my seats I used 3 inch firm foam on the seat and 2 inch firm foam for the back.
It seems to allow plenty of room for my gut.

If you get a chance to sit in a 3B I hope you like it.

What exactly is different from the 2A to the 3A that gives it more leg room. Was the rear wheel well shorter allowing the seat to go back further? I never understood the difference. I now own a 3A and previously a 3B. Never a 2A so just curious.

Curious to the answer to the CJ2A versus CJ3A question too.

Aside: here’s a 6’ 6.5” guy in a GPW tub:

Dad redid the seats a few years ago. They are comfy and overstuffed, but take up more volume than stock:

Nice Jeep!
Did some more research and it's the rear wheel tubs that are shorter by about 3". I think that's it besides the seat frame change to take advantage of the extra room but will wait for the expert's to reply.

At 6' 230 I have the same issue with my M-38. I have tried what's being recommend. Still would like a wee bit more room.

Does anyone have any feed back about this recently out by Willys?

Smaller Profile Black Steering Wheel (for 1-1/4 horn button)
Fits 46-64 CJ-2A, 3A, 3B, 5, M38, M38A1, FC-150, FC-170
Smaller Profile Black Steering Wheel
15" smaller profile steering wheel with 36 splines and .853" spline outside diameter.
Need more leg room or even belly room? This will help alot. This is a smaller diameter steering wheel than the original 17" and is offset/angled up spokes to give even more leg room around the ring.

Willys Overland has been out of business for many years, so there is not anything recently out from Willys.

I am 6' 1" and weigh about 225-230. I have no problem with leg room in my CJ2A Jeeps, but would like a little more belly room. On one of my CJ2As I used a later model steering gear with a longer column/shaft. As odd as it may sound this actually helped by raising the steering wheel up higher. I also gained a little more room by using thinner cushions on the seat backs.

This will give a little more room. On the 48 2A I have now I used an old hub and grafted a 15” steering wheel on to it. It makes more difference than you would think, but also some lose of leverage when steering.

The trucks are not much better. Won't work for everyone, in my direct case, some diet and exercise would probably be the fastest way to more room between me and the steering wheel.

Good luck going into Holiday season with that.

The legroom/ belly clearance is an on-going question. Here is a link to to a simple solution that I did a few years ago on a 2A. Anyone with even minimal welding skills can do it, only involves cutting the seat frame as opposed to chopping out the wheel well. And you can still enjoy thanksgiving dinner!

It was supposed to be at Kaiser Willy's that has the new smaller steering wheel.
