roundss 52 willys wagon build

Im new to Willys and to the forums so I hope Im posting this right. WOW its amazing to see everyone sharing their builds and their weath of information. Your build looks like fun and cant wait to see the finished ride. There is a company called Autoloc that makes some cool lights that will turn your sealed beam lights into the modern hight output style. Check it out.

Thats cheating to put the radiator outside the wagon! Looking good though.

The only problem is how many radiators I go through with it dragging on the ground like that. It stays cool though ;)

Hopefully the rad issue will be figured out soon. I'm still waiting on the guy to come take a look at it.
Now that it's level in the back and pretty close in the front I'll start tacking body mounts in place.

Well I guess I'll post it AGAIN since it didn't show up

Here's some pics of what I got tonight.
I was able to move the body mount from the GW that is just in front of the rear wheel forward. I turned it and it worked like a champ.

The body mount now missing :)

Moved forward one body mount. Now under the door.

Having done this exact transformation before and like we talked about, I will be amazed if you get away with only moving the motor back 5" or so. I had to move mine back 9" to make room for a big enough radiator and fan. I hope it works out for you. It would be really nice to make everything fit the way you have it.

WillysWorker, how far back did you have to move your motor back when you did your build? And how much did you modify the firewall to make room for the radiator and fan?

It's great to see how everyone does it different.

It's coming along nicely.

Ya, it has been harder keeping the gas tank where it is but for some reason I REALLY want to make it work. Performance Radiator is making me a radiator that will fit and leave enough room for a mechanical fan................and keep it cool (fingers crossed). When I'm done with the radiator I'm checking into hydraulic steering. Anyone know if full hydro is legal (on the road) in WA? I'll have to hit pirate and a few websites to see what my options are.

I really hope it works like you have planned and that you don't have to make any changes. You have done a fantastic job. It looks like you can gain some extra room by removing some of the original shroud sheet metal if needed.

I can't wait to see it in person. And with the size of that rear fenderwell opening, it looks like you could mount a set of 40" tires on that baby. Or at least some 37's or 38's easily.

I have been running hydraulic ram assist steering for years on a number of vehicles. I will be running it on my wagon. It works great for extreme rock crawling and daily driving. The problem with it is that is does slow down the overall steering response; even with a high pressure pump such as AGR, etc. Ram assist is legal because it maintains a solid connection between the steering wheel and the frontend.

But with full hydro steering there is no mechanical linkage; only hydraulic hoses connected between the steering column and a double-ended ram on the frontend like a tractor. I wouldn't recommend it for a daily driver. Ever.

Hope to talk soon.

That's what I was thinking too

Sometime in Sep/Oct I'll be heading to Montana or Wyoming on an antelope hunt, if the tag gods are nice to me..and I can find a place to chase them around.
The plan is to take the wagon. I'll make sure to go your way if it's all done by then. Even if it's not I'd stop by and see what a real wagon looks like

I hope 37's but with the not much back spacing I don't know how they'll look. Looks like the willys frame offers more room from looking at your pics. How wide were those 42's you tried out?

The trial 42's were 14.50's; same as my new 41's. And the wheel back spacing on both of them are 4.50".

If you have the height, I bet 37's will look and work perfect.

Hey, your wagon is going to be sweet too. I can't wait to see it. If you do have time, please do stop by. I would really enjoy that. I even have a spare bedroom all made up in case you need a place to crash for the night.

I was thinking something along the lines of the Toyo MT 37x13.5x17. Or at least that style, I hear the MT's aren't that good in the snow.
17" rims with the 6 on 5.5 bolt patten should give me a ton of options for rims.
Thanks for the offer on the room, if I stop on the way back I might be able to bring dinner  ............... or tag soup

I'll give you a call a today or tomorrow. I need to get your thoughts on the floors and rocker repair.

You are right. They are terrible in the snow. Plus the 37x13.5x17 weighs 93 lbs. And I have had a number of friends with them who struggled with really bad cupping too; even with regular rotation. Not sure why.

I did a ton of research on tires for my wife's TJ. I bought Interco Super Swamper TrXUS MT 37x12.5x17 and they are wonderful in the snow and ice because they have excellent siping. They are great in mud, rocks, and they are extremely quiet on the road. They balance very well. I was really shocked about how quiet they are. I really don't even hear them, which I didn't expect for such an agressive looking mud terrain tire. They only weigh 78 lbs. I would recommend this tire to anyone looking in the 37" range. The side tread looks great too. I would definitely buy them again. In fact, if they made them in a 41, I would have them on my Willys wagon.

New radiator is being made.
It's going to fit INSIDE the grill. I wanna say 18x17x2.5". I'll have plenty of room to fit an electric fan. once i get my hands on it I'll take plenty of pics and get more specs on it. I'm sure inquiring minds will want to know.

My son, bro and I are going to get the brake booster, steering colum, and pedals mounted....or at least mached up this weekend, then I can really start getting on the floors.

Radiator.....................DONE!!!   I can't wait to see it. My bro picked it up for me today and will bring it tomorrow. I couldn't help but play around with the old gal so tonight I pulled the old heater out. It still had some antifreeze in it. I planned on taking the heating element out and it came apart like a champ. I got the fins bent into shape and they all open, with a little wd-40 she's as good as new. Now I just gotta see how they made them all open at the same time. Pretty sure it involves voodoo, midgets, or kebler elves.

Do you have the square box heater with three little flapper doors? Mine have the flaps are stiff to turn and you manually open the ones you want opened.
