"Thought you might find this interesting. Back in the day I used to deal with Louie (Larson) at Willys Minneapolis a lot. On one of my visits he took me back to see this.. If I remember right he said he found it in a warehouse of Willys parts he bought somewhere. He believed it to be a 4 cylinder Tornado prototype. At the time he was going to spruce it up and throw it into an early CJ. That was a long time ago so I have no idea what happened to it..."

Pretty cool!

It's mentioned in the SAE report they planned for the Tornado to be a 4 cylinder as well. The intake port spacing was designed so the same intake manifold could be used, and the timing cover arrangement with all the accessories could be used as well. Pretty clever engineering, but they really did screw up a few other things. I still love em.

Have seen a few pics of 4 cyl Tornados down in South America so the did make a few. But dunno if there was any significant production.

Hail Yeas!! Based on the 6 cyl being 140HP with 210ft-lps of torque, this should of spec'd out to about 93HP with 140 ft-lbs of torque. This would be an increase of 25% HP and 30% Torque over the F-132 Hurricane. I think this would've been very well received by many a CJ5 owner back in the day.

Doug, Those numbers were for the low compression 6-230 with a 1 barrel carb. The 2 barrel high compression 6-230 actually puts out 155 HP with 230ft-lps of torque @ 2100-2200 rpm. A very capable motor. A 4 cyl would be pretty cool though.

True, but this is also the low compression f-134 I'm referencing. Comparing against your higher compression 230, the numbers jump to a 43% increase in HP and 35% in torque with only a measly 19 cubic inch increase in displacement. This assumes that the 4cyl variant is truley 4/6th the specs of the 230. Given that the CJ5 was their hi-volume product, I'm stumped on why they didn't offer this first. Perhaps they thought there would be big contracts for their military Gladiator based truck and ambulance.

Yep, a Tornado 4cyl would be fun. I had a F134 in my first wagon. Would wear it out every 20K miles. The last one had a custom header, Weber 2 barrel and a custom Isky cam. I could hit 80 on flat ground in OD, which is why I wore them out so fast!. The Isky cam made the biggest difference. I may have the specs somewhere.

Attached is the 6-230 power chart that Ken had sent me a while back.

If Kaiser had put that OHV 4 cyl. in the CJ5, stretched it out 6" for leg room, put in hanging pedals, Saginaw steering, 11" brakes and a 4 spd option they would really have had something. Throw the V6 in as an option and aaawwaaayyyyyy we go!!

In the early 90's I was living about 5 miles from Louie's place which became my go to place when I got my 62 wagon (actually a "Utility Delivery" according to the government type data plate). Louie was very helpful with lots of info and NOS parts he had. He wondered about my delivery body that someone cut holes in the side panels for fixed glass windows. Well one day while visiting he showed me micro fiche files he had which showed my Willys was part of several hundred sold to the Forest Service from 61 to 63. He had all those records from when he owned Park Jeep, a very big jeep dealer in Burnsville, Minn. I always wondered what happened to all those records after he sold the place. I wish I knew then all the trivia about Willys he obviously had lots of experience with. He was really a great guy.

It's why the cj7 was so popular ;)
