There wouldn't be 5 holes.
The "X" mark tells them where to place the 4th hole.
Notice the bottom right hole is not spaced like the others?

I was just over at storage looking at it. The CJ-5 does not have that mark.
Do you think the part came with three holes and two stamps and then drilled to either accommodate the shift boot or the side screen?
There ought to be marks in the vicinity of one of the other holes.....as the stamp looks larger than the drilled holes...
Well, I might just have to take it off and do a thorough inspection.
I don't have any idea why the stamp is there, and your explanation is the most convincing, with evidence to boot!
