New-to-me '70 Commando

Since Stakey was electrically exorcised, I unloaded Stake and loaded Mando for a visit to the DC Doctor.

Gerry at work probing with his voltmeter.

The installed VR and a VR in the cab both proved to be inoperative. So Gerry went back home (close) and brought back a new regulator.
Gerry installing wires.20260316_162110.jpg

Installed with one bolt because the wires are too short to mount in the correct location.

And we got 13.8 volts. Oh happy days!

This is the unit we installed.

Yes, it's made of chinesium.

My to do list is getting shorter.

Joe out.

Looks like I've got some wire "stretching" to do in the near future.. Thanx again Joe!! My "I owe ya" list is gettin' longer!
Les, the sad news is you really need a new wiring harness. This engine compartment harness has been fubar'd big time.

I figger the bill is up to 5 gallons.

Don't know about the nuclear option...hauled enough of those around in the past. Mebbe section by section re-wire...

Poor wiring is a hallmark of the Jeepster Commando. The pyramid plugs are notorious for failing. I eliminated the one on the firewall and replaced it with a terminal block. Rewired a new cluster plug for the instrument panel. Next up is probably the plug and wires that go to the ignition switch. Occasionally I’ll turn the switch, and nothing. I started carrying a remote starter so I don’t get stranded, lol.

What is a pyramid plug?

Easy tasks today.

The front turn lenses were highly crazed and had one broken tab each. Ol Les ordered a kit.

I scraped off what looked like old felt gasket. The new cork gasket had an incorrect hole diameter. Nuttin my Whitney Jr punch could not solve.

The kit included new amber bulbs. So out came the old clear, in went the new amber. Looks neato.

One screw holes on each housing was stripped. The extra new screws and old screws will be supplied to the vict....uh I mean Les.

Once Gerry got the charging system functioning, he said this blue wire is not needed. He said it's the stator wire. Les has the manuals. If there's a wiring diagram showing the stator wire connected, then Les can connect it.

Stator lug on alternator. Blue wire goes nowhere.

So I cut it at the stud.

In case Les wishes to attach the blue wire, I taped it up to safe it off but make usable later.

Once charging, we discovered the alternator belt was loose. The adjustment bolt was 5/16"...

but the threaded hole was 3/8". So I installed a short 3/8" bolt and tightened the belt. No longer squeals like a girl.

That's it for today.

Joe out
