Ive been watching this frame& Engine. The guy says ‘60ish, but it’s probably a late ‘62. I just bought a ‘62 pickup North of Nashville. It has the Tornado 230 engine in it. like the one you're looking at. I was going to check it out the next time I visit my daughter in Knoxville.

Picture of the front cross member will let us know if it is at least a 4 or later 6 cylinder chassis. Also there will also be a number stamped on the chassis rail. Often near the front shock mount or even right near the back between the bump stop and rear shackle from memory.

oh, ok. sorry
No problem. I didn't want to start a new thread just asking for additional info. This is on another cab, was just wondering if the EC2 really stood for anything. 1st 3 digits are 453 assumed the 53 meant year, don't know about the 4 either.

Ok more questions . How can i tell if a truck is 6v or 12v with no battery installed? Don't want to fry anything trying to jump start it.

Ok ....

The 453....

4 cylinder....1953....

EC2.. simply.Indicates you have a 475 pickup...

This should be followed by a 5 or 6 digit production number....Willys numbers started at. 10,001 .....

so for instance... My truck data plate reads ...451 EC1...19601..

. Which simply indicates I have a 4 cylinder 1951 pickup that was the 9, 601...truck off the assembly line...

There were different abbreviations for different types of configured.vehicles....EB.....EC....ED.....EE.....EF.....
..here is a partial list I found in regards to your 53 truck
.
475-4WD Chassis and Cab
475-4WD Pickup
475 Platform Stake
475-4WD Chassis, Cowl and Windshield
475-4WD Chassis Flat Face Cowl
453-EB2-10001 and up
453-EC2-10001 and up
453-ED2-10001 and up
453-EE2-10001 and up
453-EF2-10001 and up
...
Hope this of some help to ya....!!

In the picture the block casting code is L24, which is Dec 2 1964. That is probably after the trucks completed production, so it is *probably* a service replacement engine (maybe factory warrantee?) in early 65.

Frame should be stamped on the right side just ahead of the front shock mount.

Willys America sells a great technical guide to the Tornado. Also there are service bulletins in the OWF library.

Plus there are some excellent Tornado experts here on the forum, like @Ken_Parkman and @cwdtmmrs among others.

Save the Tornados!

PS. You may also have the upgraded steering.

Thank you for the heads up on the steering. I was unaware there were changes. My plan is to use this engine and running gear in a 51 wagon I recently purchased. As luck may have it the steering on the 51 was removed so I was planning on using the components from the newer truck along with the Tornado, wide ratio trans and transfer case 9A345E63-6317-4244-B95B-10EC07545B85.jpeg

Differences that I'm aware with the Tornado compared to a 226:

  1. Gear ratios in the wagon should be 3:54, optional 4.09/4.10
  2. Steering box is reversed to go with the bell crank steering.
  3. Bell crank is mounted with a tube welded into the front crossmember, and link goes to passenger side with a tie rod back to the drivers side, greatly reduces the earlier bump steer geometry and improves the stability.
  4. Should have a little bigger bearings and seals in the front wheel hubs. It's still a Spicer 25, this was a running improvement at some point; some of the vendors have this wrong.
  5. Engine mounts are different.
  6. There is a small slice out of the front crossmember to allow removal of the oil pump with the engine installed.
  7. There is a big cutout and replacement box section in the firewall to clear the bigger head.
  8. Battery is mounted different on the driver’s side.
  9. Different heater with vacuum controls.
  10. Other more minor stuff.

I'm using an earlier truck frame (pretty decent) on my Tornado pickup cause the original is so rotted.
