Hm. I’ve got another clip under the floor already. Right even with the front drive shaft u joint. Maybe if I reconnect that, it’ll hold the cable off the manifold and it’ll turn out this mystery clip will just stay a mystery. ..

Perhaps mine is missing a clip that goes somewhere on the firewall.

I gotta stop staring at these, and start doing. What’s the worst that could happen ? :p
Generator out. Turns out the PO (pointing with my thumb) connected the ground strap to the generator lower front bolt instead of the motor mount to frame bolt. I suppose I’m getting ground through the mount bolt. Never had ground problems…

Moving on. One thing I’ve learned is to just keep plugging, and sometimes just cross your fingers. The only people who don’t make mistakes are the ones that don’t do anything.

Freeze plug comes out now. And how does that oil filler tube come out? Just a good tug?

Ok, so that didn’t hurt. Got all of them out (except the one in back I’m gonna ignore.) I sometimes spend way too much time worrying about what I’m gonna do wrong.
Out of the 5, only that one that was leaking looked bad. All the others had much more beef left. I probably could’ve just done that one, but little late for that now…

I’ll clean up the holes and start reinstalling tomorrow.

Beer time, so any real work on the truck stops as soon as I pop that first can. Learned that the hard way. I’ll putter around with cleaning greasey parts n pieces

Thanks for the input and encouragement.

Got the 5 plugs replaced and all the various things put back on the engine. Smashed the heck out of my finger putting the generator back in. Not sure why, but I had a heck of a time getting it to sit square, had to take it out and put it back probably 6 times.

I ended up making a thread just about the plug task, in case it’ll help someone in the future. Here’s the link to that:

226 Freeze Plug Replacement

I’ll refill the radiator with fresh coolant, put in a new oil filter and see if it’ll start. If it starts, we’ll see if it leaks.

Man. Good thing I work alone. Got ready to refill everything. Check all the connections one more time and snug them down a bit. Started to pour in the 1st 1/2 gallon of antifreeze. Wait, what’s that running sound?

Yep, I snugged the petcock open. Doh!! And because I snugged it, I couldn’t just spin it closed quickly. At least a quart, closer to the 1/2 gallon, on the garage floor before I could get it closed.
Not a good way to start.
Better keep the fire extinguisher close by when I fire it up shortly.

More fun. Both of my batteries are crapped out totally, so had to steal one from the only remaining running vehicle on the property. Rigged up my temporary gas can (seems kind of permanent by now). Primed the carb bowl, and she fired right up. Getting this thing to start has never been a problem after I unfroze the engine. Idles nicely.

But how about the water pump and the freeze plugs??? Do they stay dry???

The pump seems dry, yea!

If I was a professional baseball player, I’d ask for more money. But batting 800 for the freeze plugs doesn’t quite cut it. Looks like 4 out of 5 are done deals. Little bit of leakage looks like from the 2nd one from the front. Once the engine heats up it’s hard to tell, cause the block is hot, but I’m pretty sure this one’s a “do over”. :( Not the news I wanted.
Luckily, I think this’ll be the easiest one cause I shouldn’t have to take off anything but the oil fill tube. I still have 2 brass plugs left also.

At this point, I gotta save it for next trip. I leave Monday, and it’ll take me till then to clean up the unholy messes I have all over.

The “gotta do” list got bigger than I expected when I got here, and everything took a lot longer than expected. The “wanna do”list suffered.

I at least pulled the truck out of the garage.

That’ll allow me to clean one of my freakin messes at least.

One good thing to report though! My speedo works! Hasn’t in 40 years, but now it does! I only got it up to 5 in the driveway so not sure how well, but it does work. I’ll take that little victory.

Another question I hope someone can help with: is there any way to connect a hose or tube to the radiator petcock? I’m gonna have to redrain the rad, and right now it just runs on the frame and all over. Does a tube fit into the petcock or something?

Not very lucky. Mine is like the one on the right.
Can I just friction fit a tube in there, or do I just accept the mess (sounds like a YouTube channel.)

Maybe I’ll go big, and find a tube that will go over the wings. Jamb it on after I get it flowing. At least then maybe I can keep most of it off the floor.

Maybe someone can tell me if this might work:
Since I have only one freeze plug with a little leak, can I whack that in a tiny bit more 2 or 3 days after I installed it with the Permatex Aviation 80019? I’m guessing no, cause the sealant has set. Probably leak worse. But I thought I’d ask, never used this stuff (or anything like it really) before. Sure would be great if I could tap it a tad bit and solve my problem.

Anyone use one of these moldable funnels, or flexible funnel?

I bought a remanufactured L134 a while back and when I fired it up more than one head bolt leaked. The shop told me to run it for 20 minutes - I did and no more leaks. A friend told me that it was a common practice to leave a block of stop leak in the water jacket just in case. Long winded way of saying - try some stop-leak
