I first started off purchasing '76 Intl Scout axel (Dana 44 - $350) only later to learn it wasn't the right choice...Then the deal of the century came my way....'96 Chevy 350 (80,000 miles), 700R4 ( told to be rebuilt) hooked to a Twin-Stick Transfer Case....for $750. I trusted the guy and witnessed him turning the crank over... only today to learn today, that it was really froze up...3 pistons with water, rust, dirt dobbers and one hornet nest. If I keep going backwards I'll never make Moab, UT in the spring of '11.
I will have the tranny pulled apart to see if it was rebuilt, open up ther transfer case and look at crate engines. I'm "Offically" todays dumb ass...

yea really you learned to only deal with jeep people you can never go wrong and most of em wont lie to ya. ever look at jeep ads (at least for old ones) they are always up front whats wrong and right with what their selling.

The Big Squishy kind. Sorry, I couldn't resist. I know all too well about the dangers of trust. Such as, Yeh, this engine runs great, only to end up having it hold down the engine stand in the garage forever. Gotta love it. We'll all get there sooner or later though. Keep rollin'.

Hey Kevin

There's a guy on the Willys tech website with a whole original Willys Wagon/Truck drivetrain for sale for a reasonable price. Hey maybe going backwards to the old smelly 6 banger might be easier. Just a thought thats all.

Kevin,

That sucks!!!!

I gave ya my 2 cents already. Take the 350 down to a machine shop and have it checked for cracks. If all is good then have em clean it up, get an oversized kit and re-build the one you have. Don't do this till after you have the tranny checked. Will be a lot more cost effective than a crate engine. Plus you can stroke out the 350 to a 383.... oooohhhh more power.....

Then you are not going backwards.... More or less a slight detour around the block then back on track.

Eric

Kevin, Sorry for your disappointment, but all is not lost until you are told the 350 is junk. You might be able to sell parts to eventually recoup your costs...
Is it possible that Matilda, the Goddess of old vehicles is trying to tell you something? I'm sure you are considering lots of power and very strong axles etc. are for you, but do you really need all that?
Perhaps it's time to reconsider...
