I'm a guy from norway, and have owned several jeeps since i was 15.
My english is'nt that good but i hope you understand me..
Today i have a 1954 sedan delivery whitch i bought in 1987.
I sandblasted the chassis and installed in a 350 chevy with TH350 transmission, saginaw steering box on the front of the framerail, spoa lift and 33" tires.
The rust was fixed and the car was painted in clear red mixing colour.
Used the car as a daily driver for some years but the chassis could not stand my heavy right foot. The rust in the body appeared again so i desided to renovate the car once more time.
This time i wanted to get the conversion legal and in norway that is not that easy.
It took me five years of mailing and getting documentation on the components before they gave me an ok.
I started stripping down the car and removed all brackets and crossmembers on the frame.
This was in 1999 but then the project was put aside. I bought a appartment, builded a garage, renovated my daily driver ( landcruiser HJ60) and so on..
The project was sleeping deep in my garage for almost 10 years but last winter i gained new inspiration and started up again.
The frame rails was boxed with 5mm steelplate and i straightened the rails. They was warped after the welding. When the rails was straight again i fixed them in a purpose built jigg in ride height so i could start building the suspension.
I'm using radius arms and panhard rods from a mercedes G-wagen, and are planning using air springs instead of the coil springs. The frame is now narrowed to 70 cm ( 27,5") outside to mercedes G-wagen specs.
Front and rear axle is from IH scout II.
I plan to use a 350 with th350, connected to a dana 20 transfercase via an advance adapter.

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

Jon: I'm impressed by your design changes and work! Please send lots of pictures.

Why did you decide to use a Chevy 350 engine when you could have used a Mercedes 300 Turbo diesel? I am considering the Mercedes engine for my wagon when the factory Tornado OHC six needs a rebuild. The two engines weigh the same - about 575 pounds (265 Kg). What engine does the G-wagon use in Norway?

Cheers,

Pavel in Canada (but probably not as far north as you are!)

Hi Pavel!
Diesel engines is ok for daily drivers, but not for enthusiast vehicles.. :D

I want the low end torque, the sound and the accelleration. I could have used another V8 but small block chevy is "bread and butter" here in Norway. Easy to get parts and cheap parts as well. The sbc is also a quite compact engine.
The most common GW engines here is the 300 diesel on older models and 270 or larger on newer cars.
There is a lot of AMG 55 GW's here but most of them is old frames with newer drivetrain and body. New cars is very expensive here and heavy and powerful cars is punished hard with taxes..
The military forces had a lot GW's with the 240 engine without turbo... Boring car..

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

I drove with my family thru Colorado in 1983. Nice place. Stayed one night in Montrose and drove thru the Monarc pass on our way to Flagstaff. One day i'll go back there!

I had to check on google maps..
I live at about 60 degrees north, about 30 miles north of Oslo.

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

Jon: here in Vancouver, we are on the 49th parallel, so you are quite a bit farther north (1000km?)....plus you have the north Atlantic/Baltic that probably has colder water than the Pacific.

Yes, i agree about performance and cost but I didn't know a Chevy V8 could be found in Norway! Don't tell me you drink CocaCola and eat hamburgers too! What about a Volvo turbo six and pickled Herring?... they couldn't be too expensive......don't let me tease you!

Cheers from down south and over to the left side of the planet-

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

I live in the south part of Norway, but it can be really cold in the winter. Last winter was extraordinary cold with temperatures below 0 farenheit for almost 2 months..
A good summer day here is like a good winter day in LA. Now we have had about 75 farenheit for a couple of weeks..
In the north of Norway the temperatures are significant lower. Norway is a long country, about 1500 miles from south to north.
North cape is at 71th paralell.

American cars was more common here earlier, but now the most cars is small cars from europe and asia. The most common american cars here is suburban, excursion and fullsize pick up trucks with diesel engines.
Norwegians are in many ways more american than americans themselves, there is burger king and mc donalds in every town and village, and we drink more coke than water..
"every" devorced man in his early fifties have a Harley Davidson in the garage, and they go on charter tours to ride bike on route 66.
Most norwegians earn good money but pays a lot of taxes.

You have to zoom out the map to see it but...

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

Love what you are doing to the frame and suspension mate.
Looking forward to the updates.

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

Hi!
The project is put on hold until I get an OK from the authoryties.
I want to move the front axle a couple of inches forward to increase space for bigger weels, and i want to use air springs instead of coil springs.
Found Firestone airbags with small outer diameter and long travel but the were expensive. Therefor i will not order them before i get the approval from the authoritys....

Are they the 9000 bags? Looked at them myself for converting the front of my XJ Jeep.

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

The bags have part nr: W01-D08-9310
Also called 1T26D-7 Firestone bags
I have found a seller in USA who sells them for 247 $ each.
Here in Norway i have to pay about 500$ each plus 25% tax...

Re: Hi there all Willys wagon fans!

Today i got a phonecall from the men in uniform. They had discussed my project and accepted all the modifications. :D
I'm glad the build can proceed while i have the inspiration...
