So I took the oil pan and side cover off the motor. It was all pretty thick with old sludgy oil. At the base of the valve springs it looks like there is a small hole. Should this be clear to allow oil to flow?

I have squirted some degreaser in there to try and release some of the sludge. Should I try to get more of the old sludge out or will it loosen as new oil runs thru it?

Thanks for any input.

Yuck ! _ _ _ right. I'm thinking the de-greaser didn't do much on that baked-on build-up of gunk.
My guess is several brushes, mineral spirits or acetone, and many minutes of soaking and brushing to clean that.
If I had the pan off, I would pressure wash that mess, and let it run out the bottom

Engine running fine otherwise ?

don’t know yet. I just got it a month ago, seller said it ran and shifted fine, haven’t been able to get it started yet. Dropped the pain, replaced the water pump, rebuilt carb, replacing the oil pump this week and replacing point, plugs and wires as well.
