Damaged steering

Crappy import part is my guess. The condition of the worm gear looks as if it chewed something up, but I doubt it could have completely ground the broken follower. Someone before you knew it was broken.

RFJP.com has sector shafts that are the best I have seen on the market in years outside of finding NOS, but I am not sure your worm gear is serviceable.

How do you remove the pin? It looks as though it's machine pressed into place. Next question is how do you install the new pin? Also, I didn't noticed that those pins are for sale.

I have them for my Ross box but haven’t sorted the removal out. I believe they are pressed in and then maybe a spot weld but not sure

Steiner tractor sells them. I measured mine and found the same ones. Been about 3 yrs ago but will look for what I ordered

@cwdtmmrs (Tim) has done it so maybe he can jump in here

How to remove old pins, according to the guys over at this tractor forum:

I'll be buying a new steering sector since I do not have the appropriate drill press to remove the pins.

Just avoid omix stuff unless they have improved them I would ask what the supplier is. No idea if other than Omix out there. NOS is very hard to find.

Be sure to measure the old shaft so you can order the correct size/diameter.

I bought a new sector shaft several years ago for the CJ5 and it did not match up well to the worm. For sure look for a NOS.....it might take a little time, but worth it.

Do your old worm or sector shafts have a part number? This came out of the CJ5 also.

If there were numbers, they are long gone.

This is my old sector shaft. It looks good to me, I'm not sure why I did not re-use it. I think I replaced it before I rebuilt the front end, hoping for a quick repair...I ought to put it back in, just for fun....

Guys, is there a list of suppliers in these forums? In your opinion who would you feel comfortable with in ordering parts that you knew would be quality and last?

Or sell the repop when I get it out....even with a Tightsteer there is slop between the worm and sector.

I think they tend to sell the same parts when it comes to steering. Either Omix or Crown and unless you ask they don’t usually tell you

I trust John Bizal. Most of his stuff is military and some of it will cross over to the CJ.

Mullins used to sell direct but now uses ebay. I buy from him also, notably OEM throw-out bearings....

Debella has good stuff, or he will tell you if it's from "off shore"

These guys are primarily military but they do have CJ stuff.

I've had good service from Peter. Be aware there are two sizes of Ross boxes used in the CJ's: the 4 cylinder civilian version, and the military/V6 version. You probably have the former but measure it before you order any replacement parts.

Right on guys. Thanks for the good resources. I will be looking into these sellers this evening. Are there any other parts in particular I should be looking to replace before I start my drive to Florida in December of this year?

The warning with the Omix steering sector has really freaked out my wife. She's looking for extra insurance on me and the jeep now!
