Here is my 1964 Kaiser Jeep Fleetvan FJ3.
Original engine is no good / not running / seized / rusted.
What I am proposing to do:
I would like to take remove my Fleetvan body (81 inch wheelbase but not much room up front in the engine bay) and swap it over to a running/driving CJ chassis that has all new braking system, fuel system, engine/trans, etc..
From there, my biggest concern would be modifying the interior engine cab cover (this is a van) to fit around the larger engine of the CJ.
This would make life incredibly easy to get this old van back on the road and still retain a pure jeep drivetrain.
Questions:
Are the Fleetvans and CJ5s candidates for a chassis swap ?
I have a 1964 FJ3 Fleetvan.
Since they both have an 81" wheelbase and are the same/similar (narrow) width, I assumed they are the same but I am curious to know for sure.
From what I've read, my FJ3 Fleetvan chassis was designed around the DJ chassis.
I also know the DJ and CJ frames are somewhat (similar) and should work with minor modification.
My biggest concern is if the CJ engine is longer up front, forward of the front wheel centerline, if that is the case, the body would perfectly over the wheels (wheelbase no problem) but if the front of the engine is longer (up front) then it would hit the grille when the body is lowered.
If the engine is longer in the back, that is expected, no problem.
The technical question would be: Is the CJ and DJ the same distance from the centerline of the front wheel to the front grille ?
