I found this in my Master parts book, thought I'd share it. Since I can only insert 3 pictures at a time, I'll put 2 here, and continue with 2 more.

I was trying to decode my 55 Willys Wagon VIN '13962'

What does that expand too??
Don,
I don't have a clue WTF is going on with this chart. It says the first number should be a 5, and yours is a 1. So there must be a different number for the Chasis. I thought the chasis number is the same as the VIN, but obviously not.
More research needed.

That is what threw me in looking at the charts I could not extract what it should say vis-a-vie my chassis number. I am far from any kind of knowledgeable source on this stuff but I was under the impression that the Chassis and VIN on the plate were one in the same...I don't have plate, thus the 'assigned' Utah VIN number.

Anyone have any insight or just an idea??????

To SavageSun Willys:

Here's my interpretation of the chassis/model codes. Your wagon should be a MODEL #54168. That would show on the I.D. plate if there's one still on the wagon. Looking at the chart, the MODEL numbers break down as: 5=1955, 4=Flat Face Cowl (whatever THAT is!), 1=2 Dr. S.W. Body (I-Beam Axle), 6=6 cyl. 226 cu. in. L-Head, 8=All 4WD.

Your SERIAL NUMBER is 13962 which fits in the sequence shown of numbers 5001-16513. 5001 was the first one built and 16513 was the last.

That should make your wagon a 1955 6-226 4WD Utility Wagon when it left the factory.

My 1954 Wagon has a serial number of 654AA210363. That shows it to be a Model 685 Station Wagon Deluxe which came from the factory with a 6 cylinder engine. However, somewhere in it's life it was repowered with the flathead 4 cylinder that's in it now. Lot's of things could be altered in the 50 some years these things have been around.

A big THANK YOU goes out to BioTex for posting the chart!!!

Hope this helps,
Old Willy

Thanks.

The paperwork I have, which means not much, shows it as a 55 Willys 6226. It has a Utah State assigned VIN which seems to jive with the story I got that the guy got it from a junkyard in Utah. The screw on plate is missing and appears to have been taken off many many moons ago. In fact it appears it was removed back when it was near new...again supporting the thought that this sat on a ranch/hunting lease in Utah for most of its life. The shape of the body and especially the glass (windshield) and the interior wood seems to support the low mileage.

My 'Model' as shown on the AZ title says 6226S...not sure what the 'S' stands for. The Utah assigned VIN is 0182, but I doubt that has any meaning other than to the state of Utah... ;)

FYI the last 5 numbers stamped in the data plate is the number it rolled off the assembly line. There should be some numbers before the last 5 with a dash stampped in between signifying the mod, engine, etc....
