Cam timing 6-226

Trying to assemble my 6-226 and I have what looks to be a problem with the cam timing. With the #1 piston at the top of its stroke (TDC) the intake valve is partially open. If I rotate another 360, the exhaust valve is well open at the top of the stroke. This doesn't look right. I rechecked the timing marks and have 10 pins between the marks. What should I look for?




 
Turning your engine in the correct direction and watching your valves, get the valves to the correct position for TDC (both closed after the intake closes), and see where your timing mark and piston are. Close or not?
 
Not even close!! I thought I was careful when I installed it the first time....I guess not. Thanks for the tip.

Keep in mind, the intake valve should close at the end of the piston's downward intake stroke. It will remain closed as the piston comes up on the compression stroke. So, approximately half a turn of the crankshaft after the intake closes, should be close to TDC.

I've assembled a lot of engines over the years, but this one has been a real challenge. The whole front plate, timing cover and front oil pan filler is really a strange design.
 
Suck-squeeze-bang-blow. That's how teach the young fellows coming out of school. For whatever reason they seem to remember that when doing some sort of engine timing
 
There's an easy way to see if you have it right. The piston is at TDC twice in the cycle. At the top of the compression stroke both valves are closed. The next time the piston comes up is the "overlap". This is when the exhaust is pushed out and the intake stroke begins. When you turn the crank back and forth during overlap one valve should be closing and the other opening as the piston is at top. You can also refer to the workshop manual in the library section of this forum.

I just had to see it for myself right from the 1962 Motors manual. The old book needed dusting off anyways. Hope this helps

Edit: In hindsight, I think the pictures below are showing the timing at TDC for tie exhaust stroke.

I was tearing down an engine yesterday and paused to take a picture of the camshaft and crankshaft gear timing marks with the #1 cylinder at top dead center. The mark locations bear no resemblance to the picture above, which must be indifferent to TDC. No doubt another turn of the crank would produce the magical 9-link spacing.

I'll add a pic of another engine at TDC, showing the marks in the same locations. Note the different chain styles. The chain on the red engine is a Morse.

I know this is an old thread but I am searching for the part numbers for the Morse style timing chain. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks and get off the computer and go work on you're Willys

Nice pics. That must be the difference between the new and old style parts. Any idea of what year those motors are?

Partnumber for the early type chain ( Morse) is 707289
