I came across this artful schematic and to me, it helps understand the workings of the BW Overdrive unit.
These were popular in the '50's and '60's American automobiles for fuel economy.

Any old Motors Auto Repair manual will have a version of those overdrives. They were mostly 40’s and 50’s.

and as an available option into the very early 70's! They are a great little unit that could actually handle a fair bit of power. Especially the R-11 with four planets.
