Still on my quest to find a decent wagon for a decent price...

Looking at this one, remarkably rust free but still a bit of a project. Needs a complete interior, missing stock seats, mismatched glass, no wood strips. Exterior paint could be ok for short term, but probably would want to paint it. Interior paint looks original and could use work. Has a 327 mated to an unknown transmission/transfercase with what apprears to be stock axles.

The million dollar question... what's it worth in your opinion?

Can you view the vehicle ? Is it close to you? Seeing that green paint, makes me believe it has been repainted...and if it's a bad job, that expense can be costly...the steering wheel was originally white and now it's green? In the dash I see someone has done some additional wiring? Does it have a modern fuse panel? I don't like pulling someones ride apart....but I'm rebuilding mine and know what I'm getting for the money spent....you don't won't to buy a pig... by just poking it....I have nearly $5,000 in mine and still having FUN!!!!!!

Can't go see it, it is in Missouri and I'm in Idaho. The paint appears to be weathered original, but hard to tell from the pics. It has nicks and chips you'd expect in old paint. The seller sent 40+ hires photos of the underside, and it appears to be super clean. Clearly someone has spent some time and effort on it, but who knows what really lurks in there. There are lots of little oddities and unfinished bits. Seller has only had it for 6 months, so he doesn't seem to know much about the details.

If the price was right (and the asking price is over the top) it might be a worthy project, but after thinking more about it, I don't think it is the one for me.

Wow that looks like a really cool wagon for sure. Dont knock the non stock seats. Those high back bucket seats are much safer than the little old original low back bucket seats. Looks like it has seat belts too. (not a bad thing either). Take it for a ride and see how it feels. Body looks really nice too. Looks like a good buy; how does the engine swap look??. Maybe take a look up under the dash and see how the wiring looks too. Walcks sells new wiring harness's. Thats my 2 cents thats all. Good luck. Keep us in the loop.:)

Pete, Where at in Missouri? I live in central MO; 2 hrs east of Kansas City. If it's close by I could run by and take a look for you. I see by your last input that you're probably gonna pass up on it. Truthfully, I would too. While the body looks decent, it's hard to tell how much "Willys" is left and how much Chevy has taken over. I might be wrong, but I'm gathering that you are looking for one that has all of the correct things with it. Personally, I think that's the way to go, but i'm biased. Well, if I see something pop up that I think fits what you are looking for, I'll plug it in here. Good luck.

Here's a thought for anyone and everyone...I've been toying with this idea, back and forth for about a year or so now, but here it is. I'm thinking of selling my wagon. I'm about to dump 3K in to an engine rebuild. It blew a head gasket late last summer and it's been sitting waiting for me to rob a bank. Anyhow, it does need a rebuild, so i didn't want to just change the gasket. So here's the deal - $7,000 gets:

The '54 wagon with everything in stock condition. It is not original, but it is stock.
Two engines that need rebuilds (L6-226) One is a two bbl / one is a one bbl

Oh, and it has an overdrive installed too.

Assorted other parts / components New and old:
Starters
fly wheels
bellhousings
gas tank
Air cleaner
Complete gasket set (Willys America) new
Head Bolt Set - (WA) new

She ain't perfect, but she's far from bad.

This is one of those weak moments (it's Pete's fault  ) and a one time good deal offer with zero negotiating.

Unanswered question:
If I put the money in to the engine rebuild, I won't sell it, so as stated...this is one of those weak moments with a small window of opportunity.
Some of my pictures are in the gallery. I'll see what else I have.
Take care all.
Steve
Just realized I can add this to the classified section, so some of you may see it twice. Sorry.

I think you should sleep on it, and change your mind in the morning... ;)

Aquawilly.....take this from a man who has died many deaths....none of us are guaranteed tomorrow and selling your precious Lady would surely kill ya....hold on to her...do not sell her...head gaskets can be fixed...engines can be fixed....Good Times are hard to come buy....would the wife sell her wedding band?....NO....Do Not Sell your Willys....please....you will break my heart!

Aqua, I agree with Kevin.

KEEP it!!!! There is so still so much life left in her.

Pete,
Sounds like you might be getting more of a project than you are looking for but if the price is right, it might be worth a drive.

Eric- I have ruled this one out... to many unknowns for to much $$$. Still looking....

Aquawilly: It all depends on why you are considering selling... If you a bit tired and frustrated at the moment, then perhaps waiting and rethinking is a good decision. If, however, you need the money for family, then sell. I don't think equating an old truck with a wedding band should be taken seriously!

All the best, whatever you do.

Pete,

I was looking at CarsOnline.com tonight and a guy in Washington State is advertising a 1951 2WD Wagon with a rebuilt flathead 4cyl and asking $6500.00. Look in the Willys section. The car looks nice in the pics he's posted. Looks to be stock and not cut up and it looks like it has both rows of original seats. Might be worth investigation if you are still looking.

My 54 Wagon has a flathead 4 and with the overdrive, it's happy at 50-55mph all day long and good gas mileage. You won't pass anybody or burn off the tires, but for fun cruises it's just fine.

Cheers,
Old Willy

Thanks for the tip OldWilly. I'm just about to pull the trigger on a '60 4wd wagon that is in pretty great shape. It has a camo interior that I will want to change out, but the rest of it is nice. I'm pretty handy with an upholstery sewing machine, so I'm not too worried about that. It has a decent paint job that has been on there for many years and no apparent rust in the rear quarters, pto winch with new cable, powder coated wheels and decent tires, flathead six engine overhauled in the late 90's. I'm waffling a bit because it is in Arkansas, and it will cost a bunch to ship it to Idaho...

I'll have a decision later today... Seller is trying to figure out how to email me some video clips before I commit.

Pete
