Please help, I need help identifying my Frank-n-Jeep engine. There is no serial number on the block at the front of the head or on the passenger side of the block.5706.jpegIMG_20190916_233903151.jpgIMG_20190916_234054711.jpg

Unless I am seeing something wrong that is an Early Gear drive engine so a late 1946 The head is from an earlier engine most likely a MB It would have had serial numbers stamped on the pad behind the water pump. Clean the area well then lightly sand it with some 400 grit just enough to make it shinny. Then take and eye dropper and put some White vinegar on the pad wait a while and you might be able to see some numbers. As the stamp goes into the metal it compresses it and makes it denser this denser metal will etch from the surrounding normal metal at a slightly different rate. This is the backyard mech version of how the FBI and crime labs bring up the serial number on firearms with the serial number ground off. It works once in a while. Worth a try.

Typically when one of those blocks get machined, the serial number gets ground off the water pump boss.

If s/n is gone try sanding the rust off lightly and dab very little Hydrochloric acid on the spot, might raise the numbers

I found mine on the water pump boss (47). I got a wire brush on a drill and cleaned it enough to see. really thought it was not going to be there.

Looks like a Willys MB motor with an MB head, see if there is no number stamped on a raised boss behind the oil filter assembly (at top edge of block)

I agree it could be a late MB. It would have a boss behind the oil filter for numbers as well if it is. Left over late MB engines were installed in CJ2A's. It also has a M38 carburetor

So I have a 48 CJ2A sn 1553xx. I have been trying to find the engine sn but no luck. It’s not on block at water pump (and pulled head last nite and pistons oversized at .60 so been overhauled). Last week found this number behind the oil dipstick. Could this be an MB motor from this discussion? My dad has owned the jeep since early 50s and it had to have been rebuilt before the late 60s. Here is best view of numbers. They appear up side down (relative to gravity) and looks to me one or more are unreadable

I don't know what those numbers stamped are. They are not on an embossment behind the oil filter like they should be.

Non reinforced head and 3 bolt water outlet. That means 43 or 44 MB head IF it says WILLYS on it. If not maybe GPW. I will look for that 638632 casting number.
