226 rebuild

@Tilatobawillys or @Big Dog Frank might know as well. @timd32 might have the name in the paperwork.
Actually have no paperwork for Willa Dean, never really asked for any either, I'm not sure but just figured he returned most of the original to Sam the step son of Ira the owner. It has 2 small manuals in the glove box an original owners manual and repop 4WD guide.

The rest I always figured was on here documented.

Evening all, I am in the process of resorting a 54 pickup and I’m looking for someone who can rebuild a 226. I want to keep the truck as original as possible. I am in Northeast Ohio. Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Just finished the rebuild of my 226 out of the 1961 Station Wagon here in North Carolina. Parts were a b..... to find. Needed .060 oversize rings and had to get them fabricated. Oil pump was another experience and hunted all over for one, guy on eBay sold me one that did not have the gear secured to the shaft. Did not discover that until weeks later when we installed it in the motor. He claimed that it had a manufacturers warranty. He still would not except a return. Manufacturer only guarantees through sellers. It has surely been an ADVENTURE and I am sure that will continue. Good Luck

Do you have to have the original engine? I have a 57 6-226 that I just swapped out for a Oddfire V6 in my 57' PU. The 6-226 was rebuilt (by me) and has less than 2000 miles on it. It is complete with everything except the alternator (used that on the V6). If you are interested let me know. I see you are in NE Ohio, I'm in Ann Arbor MI, so you aren't that far. I have the manifolds, carb and dizzy. All have been rebuilt.

Hi Gary
Why Did you change out the engine?
Do you have the compression numbers?

Also, did you have to modify the firewall??????

I wanted something that was a little more "modern" and would give a little more HP. Plus, But mostly, I needed a project and like to tinker. The V6 Oddfire has the dizzy in the front, so no firewall mods were required.
Here's the compression # 1 thru 6. 130,140,140,135,140,140. That was 1000 miles ago.

want to cut the firewall.

keep me posted on what you do with the 6 !!

Sorry Gary
More questions
Do you have more pictures of the engine installation
It looks like you left the original engine mounts (that is a good thing)
I am running the 226 but, always looking for a better mousetrap

Thanks Gary

I think the SB Ford engine (289-302) is a good choice from what others have said. It also has the Dizzy in front. I was able to install the V6 without cutting anything. I slotted the holes in the trans cross member and the transmission mount. Also the T-case mount. Doing this, I was able to move everything forward 1.25" which gave me enough firewall clearance for the rocker covers. I tried to not cut/alter stock parts just in case the V6 didn't work out. I welded in new engine mounts to the frame but they can always we cut off.

Here's the difference in length. The web says the Oddfire is 200 pounds lighter vthan the 6-226.

One of the more challenging things was the clutch linkage. On the 6-226, clutch arm is behind the cross bar. On the V6, it's in front of it. I made a new mount for the trans side, then cut and rewelded the one pivot arm to line up. Turned out OK.

Hi Tom, I’m with you keeping your truck all original.
We briefly conversed here back in March when you picked up your truck. I’m just 30 minutes down the road in rural east Alliance.
I personally rebuilt my L6-226 finishing this past spring. Truck back on the road in June.
These engines are not difficult to rebuild. I did the tear down and reassembly. I’m willing to help you. I have a great machine shop in Canton that handled all the needed cleaning, inspecting, repair & machining I can direct you to. Maybe he will even do the whole rebuild.

I do remember that!! I am getting it in the garage either this weekend or next and going to see how bad things are. I know it turns over, but haven’t tried to get it to fire. Once I do that, I am stripping it down to the frame and starting from the ground up. If it fires, I’m going to see how it does, if it doesn’t I’m rebuilding it. I’ll keep you all posted. @Fred46 I’ll find a way to get my number to you, I’m sure I’ll have a million questions!! Lol
