Willys Model
  1. Wagon
Willys Year:
  1. 1956
This build might be a bit different from most. I was torn between doing a full resto on this wagon and just making it in to a driver. Well I have had a show truck before and don't want that ever again. So I chose to make it a driver and just enjoy it. Who knows I might do a full frame off down the road. My plan for it right now is to make this willys into a period correct wagon. The second owner built it in the early 1970's and added a few items such as the slotted wheels and chevy v8. I am going to keep with his slight hotrod theme.

Background:
This willys has had 2 owners before me. The first was a family from Arizona who drove it to New Hampshire in the late 60's early 1970's. The second was a man who bought it in 1973. It stayed in his family untill 2007 when we bought it. As the story goes the previous owner purchased the willys when he was in highschool. He repainted it and replaced the motor with a chevy v8 (283). He then planned to drive it cross country with his best friend only making it to Vermont before turning around and taking his fathers Blazer instead. From 1977 on it pretty much sat around his farm in a barn being used occasionally. It was last tagged in 1983 and proceeded to sit. The owner passed away and the wagon continued to sit. Then needing its space it was offered forsale on creglist. I was told it was rust free and had been sittin for quite some time. It was infact the cleanest wagon I have ever seen and a deal was struck.

This is how we found it. A true barn find and the tires still held air!

The motor was ummm nuts

Headed home.!

So the first order of business was to see if we could get the old chevy to turn over. The answer was NO. When i picked up the wagon the spark plugs had been out of it for an unknown amount of time. The harmonic balancer bolt was also snapped off a tell tale sign she was locked up tight!. I tried everything to free up the motor but it would just not move. I believe it was over heated and that would explain why it had sat for so many years.

willysmotor015.jpg

washed it on the way home. has alot of dents but no rust and the paint still shines
willysmotor021.jpg

You name it i tried it to get the pistons to move but they are locked up solid!

so out came the motor to be replaced with another v8

Can Anyone Identify this adapter set up? it needs a new input shaft seal

Oh joy Cleveland joints!

So i needed a motor. I found another willys with a 1978 350. A tree had fallen on it and ended its life. Also the frame was rotted out. I parted the truck out and put the motor in the wagon

I honestly have never been happy with this motor. It idles high due to an intake manifold vac leak and smokes a bit. To fix the manifold leak I would need to pull the distributor which i cannot do in the willys because of the firewall. Since the input shaft seal on the transmission is leaking and the motor needs to come out for that I have decided to replace the motor again.

The NEW motor has the one piece rear main seal block, edelbrock intake, holley 750 DP, HEI distributor, Double hump heads, dished pistons, unknown cam ect... I have been resealing and repainting this motor all week in preparation for the swap. It is probably way too much motor for the wagons stock drive train but I don't plan on beating on it ever. I also need to replace the wiring harness and some cracked side glass. the goal is to have this on the road this spring. The first time in almost 30 years!

Suggestions, comments, questions welcome. I hope you enjoy this build.

Really enjoyed reading about the wagon mate. Never seen one in such good condition after sitting so long. Should be a great runner once it is finished. Rather replace drivetrain parts than spend more time cutting out rust.

Welcome to the forum Ian, great looking wagon-

Pete

Welcome to the forum Ian.

That was quite a find. I was diggin all the acorns stashed on the intake of the 1st engine. Looks like you took a great home from some little critters.... Hopefully the went running out of all the cracks with the wash on the ride home.

Eric.

Welcome to the forums that is a great looking wagon. Wish I could find one in that good of shape. Keep us posted on the motor project.

Great, great find and welcome to the forum...however I can't believe you took the SBC 2 barrel that ran on acorns out. Are you going to keep the original paint on her?...good luck

Thanks for all the complements on the wagon. I guess if I could change anything about it would be the SBC under the hood and the antenna in the middle of the cowl..... But I can't complain it is so solid! Most everything here is salt rusted so to find any car of this era in this shape is very rare. Anyways back to the build

Well I have been getting parts together and the motor is almost ready to go in. I live in the North East and If any of you are firmilar with this area the climate is quite moist. We get Snow in the winter and the DOT loves to use Road salt. Well the donor motor came out of this old plow truck. And boy oh boy was it rusty!

I broke almost every exhaust bolt off in the heads. This was not too bad I just wedled nuts to the broken bolts and was able to remove them. Next two of the spark plugs sheared off in the heads. That brought on the suck! I decided to pull the heads so I could inspect the cylinders and get them checked out. Well they are double hump heads off a 1969 327! Great so I got a hot little 350 going in a stock wagon. To prep the motor for paint I cleaned and chipped off as much scale rust as I could. I then used Metal Ready to prep the surface.
Winchbumpedone009.jpg

After that cured I applied two coats of POR-15 rust paint. Since I had cleaned the block so well the metal ready was needed to etch the block and any bare metal. The trick here was to alllow the POR to set up and get tacky and then lay on the engine enamle. IF you let the POR completely dry it will not bond with the top coat and things will peel. I used the silver because it contains aluminum which fills in the divits and viods.
Winchbumpedone010.jpg

I did not paint the pan because it was rusted and had a hole. Also make sure you don't get the POR on gasket surfaces as it is a PITA to get off.

I was debating between chevy orange or red. I chose red because it was different and I feel it gives the motor a classic look. The color is just plain Dupli-color engine enamel red. I used it on the other 350 and it holds up just fine. I painted the heads in the same fashion off the motor and here we are installing them on the coldest day thus far -6F. Really wish my torpedo heater was working. I am using felpro gaskets through out this build.

BTW the color is darker in person the pictures make it look lighter for some reason
Winchbumpedone011.jpg

The heads where resurfaced, mag fluxed, recived new valve stem seals, and had the seats checked. These are the smaller 194 intake valves but that is fine for the willys.

More to come tomorrow..................

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody!

Made some more progress on the wagon. Got the Old 350 out and sold which was great because now I have some money for parts!
Winchbumpedone029.jpg

So with the old motor out I can now focus on putting in the new motor and getting this thing running again. I am going to redo the exhaust while I am in there and clean paint and reseal the transmission and transfercase. After that is complete it will be on to rear suspension, newer custom wiring, and a brake system check and hopefully it will be on the road withing 3 or so months...

As I tackle the smaller projects I will update this build and hopefully give others some ideas.

Have to put smaller pictures up on here so we can read all the text that gets lost under the right border.
Love to know all what you said.
Would getting rid of the borders fix the problem too Pete? Know you have been trying for a long time to fix this.

You are ambitious...are you wearing work gloves or are they just to keep your hands warm? Working in the cold slows me down. Double Hump Heads, now that's nostalgic too.

hey Gojeep I thought I was the only one having that problem with the borders its just on some posts maybe like you said the pics are too big at least I'm not going crazy like I thougt :D

Guys sorry about the large pics i will need to figure that out....

Anyways a lot has happened on the wagon and I can thank the junky job market for it. I recently Graduated from College and have not had much job luck. I got a gig for this summer and some new leads for after that but will probably be leaving home headed west. So I need to get all these project vehicles done!!

I have been wrenching on the willys a lot.
Got the motor resealed and all painted
Rebuilt the transmission and transfercase.
Repacked the Cleveland joints.
Welded in a new exhaust on the drivers side
Remounted the rad and welded new brackets
Hooked it all back up and Bam it fired up!

Still need to set up a throttle pedal and build a battery box but this is a huge mile stone! I don't have to pull the motor out again I am very happy!! With the chevy conversion you have to install the trans and then the motor and lining up the input shaft IS a B@tch.

Here is the first ride since 1983! Keep in mind the carb was leaking gas and the wagon has no brakes!

Bunch of loose ends to tie up.
Rebuilding the holley carb now
New rear springs coming this week so i can ditch the rear fangs

Would have been a cool feeling seeing it come to life after all that time.
Might want to fix your spelling mistake on the second frame though. ;)
