1946 CJ2A Brake issue

I may have to do that as well. I just need to find a drum that will work on my right front brake. The original is out of round, and the brake shop will not attempt top true it, because it is too far out of whack. I should have doen that in the first place. Live and learn!

What you did wrong is rebuilding your old obsolete 9’ original brakes. Why? Even all rebuilt they dont work.
(sorry, but it’s the truth)

Seems to me correctly rebuilt original brakes would work fine with the original engine and drivetrain, with the original intended purpose of the Jeep in mind. Of course this doesn't apply if the vehicle has been modified. In that case the Whoa should be equal to or exceed the Go;).

We all have our opinions on the original brakes. Diggers opinion differs from that of Bruce W. which differs from mine.

All I will say on this is that IME, done right, the original brakes will skid all four tires on blacktop. I know of at least seven Jeeps with original brakes that will skid all four tires. What more can one ask?

I suspect that many folks are used to modern disc brakes. I also suspect that drum brakes are a tad out of their experiences. Thus, they think that the original drum brakes are no good even when they are fine.

From my perspective & IMHO, if I were faced with an original brake system needing "rebuilt", or replaced, I would go with either late model 11" drum brakes, or convert to disk brakes. Cost wise, in both time & money, either "upgrade" might actually be cheaper than replacing all of the original components with new original ones. Another plus to these upgrades is parts availability. So far, I can buy parts for my 11" drum brakes from NAPA. If I went with discs, I would make sure that the cylinders, discs, & pads are readily available before I purchased, or made an adapter kit.

I just went thru the conversion from 9” to 11”

I was either going to replace all the 9” parts or do the same with the 11”. Finding the backing plates might be the hardest thing. When I costed out both it was a wash pretty much. My drums were toast (2 of them so far)

It is about the same cost to go disc but I busted wanted to keep it more like out of the factory

If interested you can have my 9” from the front for the cost of shipping. One is disassemble and the other is intact.

If you think you might go the 11” google 11” brakes for CJ-2A and it will bring up several links to the needed part numbers. All but the backing plates are available at your LPS or places like Rock Auto

Here is my fronts. Note the shoes I got are same length on both
