58 Green Machine

Interesting. What's the reason why you decided to put the cab mounts on via hardware vs. welding? Or will they be welded when all is said and done?

Gary, you have accomplished a lot on your project, in just a little over a months work. I appreciate that you bolted your cab mounts onto the frame rather than welding. Seeing the progress you are making is motivating me to get my MG done so I can start on the Willys. I have inspected my Willys many times since you started your built. My cab is in good shape, however my box is not so good.

My box isn’t in great shape either. But I wont let that slow down. I appreciate the comments and want to keep the momentum going. I’m looking forward to driving it out of the garage someday. I took my seat in tonight to get reupholstered. It is going to be done very similar to original except in black. Here is pictures of what they looked like when I took them in.

I felt as though it’s cleaner look. It’s also easier to line up. Just my preference for this.

I prefer the bolt on just in case I miss on the location of the mounts. If they are bolted on, the problem be can fixed by welding the drilled holes shut and then re-drilling where they should have been. If every thing is as it should be then if one wants you can always weld them

I’m not worried about strength of my set up as my body was only held on by 5/16 inch bolts. The new setup is with 1/2 inch bolts. I feel pretty good about the strength. Sometimes welding can actually make the steel brittle if heated up too hot. Seen it happen before at work. Also seen that too much heat also twist things which we have done to tweak equipment at my job. Not to say that it can’t be welded but in my case, I feel this is plenty strong.

Boy does that look familiar (see my build thread!). As for the response about the bolt on body mounts, that makes sense, never thought about it that way.

Made good progress tonight. Was able to get the Chevy bumper off. Also fabricated the new brackets off the frame for the bumper from the Willys to fit. Hopefully tomorrow or Sunday I can do the front bumper.

Front bumper is on which means the body is now officially fitted onto the Chevy frame. Now I have to to take it all apart again to paint the rest of the frame and run brake lines, fuel lines and some wiring. Also sold the flathead straight 6 motor from the original Willys to someone else that is doing a full Willys restoration. Spent the whole day working with my son on this, which made it an awesome day!

Gary, Great to see that it is all fitted to the Chevy chassis. Not as much fun taking it apart to be able to finish the painting etc. At least that was the feeling I had when I removed the 47 Dodge cab several times from the Dakota chassis to get things lined up etc. It is nice that you could recover some of the cost by reselling parts that you will not need.
If I keep at it I could get my MG finished and get started on the my 1950 Willys chassis swap before spring. Seeing your progress keeps me focused on finishing the MG. Keep up the great work.
How do the wheels center under the front fenders?

Is the donor truck you are using a full size 94 chevy short box or a 94 S10 Short box? In the picture it appears that the wheels do not extend beyond the fenders
as i would have thought they would have it is a full size chevy

They seem to fit very well. I tried to keep them pretty centered.

I used What I believe is a full size 2 door short box C1500. Same wheel base as the Willys.

When I first looked at the donor pickup pictured in your first post, I thought it was a full size pickup. This evening, I magnified the picture and i thought I saw what looked like a 10 on the door. Glad to hear it is a full size as that is what I am going to use

What a mess! Guess that’s what happens when you turn your shop into a paint booth. Lol. Got a lot done this past week. Now that the Willys body has been fitted to the Chevy frame, I’ve tore it back down to work on the frame. It’s been painted along with some other parts. Ordered all new glass and seals. Hopefully I can start running all new brake lines and gas lines next week along with reassembling the rear end on the truck. Hopefully I’m not the only one out there with a Willys “mess”. Lol.

Hi Gary. It's Looking Good. You are coming along really good, and it looks good too! Keep on Truckin! Good Work! Pivnic

Gary, yes the painting gets a bit messy but that is a sign
of the progress you are making.

What is the best way to do a build, get your wife involved. Tonight she did this for me on the air cleaner cover. A wonderful little extra touch to the build! She rocks!

Gary, you have the best looking air cleaner cover around, way better than black. Are you painting the body to match the cover? Not so sure my wife would be all that interested to come out to the shop you do remember I said it is messy :(

A solid day today. Got drivetrain back together. Gas tank and shocks installed. Ran all new gas lines and brake lanes. It’s finally starting to look like a truck again.
