I'm in the process of buying a CJ 3A. The current owner does not have in pink slip (it was misplaced sometime in the past) and he's trying to find the VIN so he can get a duplicate. I understand the VIN for a CJ3A is usually on a little steel plate that is riveted on the fight side of the firewall under in hood. However, someone has removed it (the holes are there - but no plate). Is there another place on the vehicle where the VIN number should appear?

Thanks!

The VIN should also appear on the flat surface just above the water pump. It will be stamped into the engine unless the engine has had the head surface machined flat. If that is the case the serial number may have been machined off.

Good luck!

In a case like yours where the Serial Number plate has been removed, most DMVs will use the engine serial number that, as Marc said, is stamped on the flat boss above the water pump, unless the block has been decked. Then you have no number, unless you have one of the rare Willys that has the Serial Number stamped on the frame. That was done in different places at different times, but mostly not at all on the vast majority of Willys.

You may have to go through some long, involved process with your local police and DMV to get it re-certified.
