Hope your trip is going well Ben. A lot of good shots but this is one that stands out.

On an Alaskan cruise over 25 years ago and ashore in Skagway, there was this old White bus from the 1930's parked at the curb.
Glad to know the old bus is still on the road....Per the post above.

Back online for a few - Yellowstone and Glacier run these again. They are on modified v10 and v8 truck chassis with modern running gear. There is a place in Montana that does it. Occasionally you can find a worn original for anywhere from $35k to $70k.

When I visited Glacier NP last year the ranger told me that Ford Mo Co took the last remaining buses from the park a few years ago and refurbished all of them.

I know Yellowsyone has had around 8-10 of these since around 1997 - originally some had the 7.3 powerstroke and some had ford V10s - the newer rebuilds have airbrakes as well.

This was taken in 2002 in Glacier NP, and that was the story then. They'd put new brakes and running gear under them, and I believe they were running on natural gas.

Quick update from Gardiner, MT before we head back into the Yellowstone.

Over the last 5 or so days in the park we have driven 500+ miles between all of the sights and sounds and smells.

It has rained a bunch today.

Here are some photo highlights until we resume our regularly scheduled program:

1 of 11 bears seen to date this trip. I had only seen 4 in my life in YNP in the prior 40 years. Good trip.

The old Conoco by the Lake General Store. I bought gas there in the distant past.

Monday the 18th update.

Today the goal was Cody, WY. We modified our plans a bit due to the heavy rains in the park. Originally we planned to due the Beartooth highway and end somewhere around Lander or Riverton, WY. Due to heavy snows the Beartooth was closed.

Due to fires and smoke we will avoid Colorado but still put on some miles and adventure getting home.

We rolled South and East out of Mammoth. Almost immediately we landed in a few animal jams.

It was raining and dreary for the last 1.5 days and it was getting old.

It finally stopped on the NorthEast Entrance road, but still overcast and threatening.

The Lamar Valley heards were visible and periodically close to the road.

On this trip in the park we had seen numerous bears, Buffalo, some Elk, Deer, etc, but no Moose. My wife really wanted to see a Moose. I told her they were rare but we would watch out.

About two miles before the NE Gate we found one.

I dhot him through my Binoculars while I watched the boys. The Wife walked down to the group of watchers to see it better.

From there we hit Silver Gate with a Bull;

Then on to Cooke City and started the Chief Joseph Hwy.

Slowly, but, surely, we dound our way to nice dry sunshine. It was great.

There was a recent landslide that had the highway to one lane for 50 feet:

The clouds over the Beartooth didn't look good.

Then we went around a mountain pass and we were in for it.

We were climbing high and steep - 30mph in 2nd was a workout.

Here comes the storm:

We made it to the pass.

Part June 18th update

After hitting the highest pass on the Chief Joseph Highway we hit rain and started dropping into the valley towwards Cody, WY. We could see more beautiful sunny weather ahead.

We would see it, then turn back into the storm.

Then it seemed as we finished the Scenic HwY and turned for Cody that the worst was ahead.

We saw some animals off to the East and had to remember we would be back to sheep, cattle and Antelope on the range.

I even ran the vacuum wipers for awhile.

In light rain we made it into Cody and to the hotel. I did an oil change in the parking lot of Autozone and will grease everything tomorrow.

Tomorrow is another day in Cody. Then we get back on the road for the rest of the adventure.

So far, short of the fuel pump issue, the Willys has performed great. We are already planning next years trip.

More to come.

The journey continues!

Your kids will either get the old car bug...or not. Either way they will remember the trip.

I fondly remember a trip to Yellowstone from California when I was about 8 years old, in our exceedingly slow VW bus. It broke down in Cooke City, and I remember a little tin-sided shop that helped weld something.

This pic is from a different, more local trip in that era. (We didn't take the canoe or top box to Yellowstone.)

Anyway, you're creating great memories for your family.

What happened with the fuel pump? Did you rebuild it in the park?

I forgot - so here is the Fuel pump story:

Back when I got this fuel pump I drove a few hundred maybe even a thousand miles and the fuel pump died. I decided to take a look then and opened it up to find the check valves were installed as cartridges and had come loose. I reinstalled them peened them well (I thought) reassembped and all was well.

Flash forward to climbing one of the highest passes in Yellowstone when the engine dies and won't restart. We are about a mile or so past the last turn out and the one 25 feet in front of us might as well be two miles away.

We coast back down the road in our lane, in reverse with the hazards on, stopping periodically for the folks that don't know they d)should pass us until we sit for a minute or so exchaging hand signals (polite hand signals) (barely). We finally make it to a turn out and coast in.

I pop the hood and jump the starter to see the upper fuel filter dry and not blobbing fuel with each crank. Nothing.

We have stopped in a heavily wood spot with no wind and lots of syringe nosed friends looking for donations. I decide to pull the pump top cover (bottom on the engine) where you can inspect the check valves. One is rotated 90 degrees out of its socket like a wide open butterfly in a carb. No check valve action on the pump to carb circuit...... problem found.

I pull the pump and donate a lot of blood. I douse myself in 99% deet and keep working. I install the valve properly, peen it very good this time and reassemble everything. I clean up my hands bit and jump the starter. A little fuel makes it to the filter. I give the carb full choke and hit it and she fires to life and the upper filter fills with fuel. I cut the choke and she purrs. Fuel pumping away.

I pack it all up and we drive on. No problems since.

Sinclair ethanol free 92 smells really good......

2000 mile oil change, 1000 mile interval Chassis Lube, and air filter oil changed. Ready for another 1000/2000 miles.

68F with a light breeze - couldn't ask for more.
