Some folks just want to argue, do they know the harm they do....

Internet boards can be a little fickle some times. This board seems to be an exception. On another board that I have enjoyed immensely over the years I mentioned that I was having trouble with my fuel line in my Willys. In the conversation the fact that the stock line is 1/4" made several posters doubt my veracity. I couldn't seem to make them believe me, they swore that I was wrong and if I wasn't someone MUST have switched the line out. Even after I pasted the speck sheet that clearly states that my wagon had a 1/4" fuel line one poster still doubts me. This poster is extremely knowledgeable about his jeeps, I've learned a lot from him over the years. Since I made a mistake a few years ago he always tries to prove I'm wrong, even after realizing and admitting my error he will not let me go. Sometimes it amazes me to see what lengths folks will go to for an argument.

Years ago I moderated a hunting site for ~7 years. At the time it was the largest predator hunting board in the world. Money got in involved and things turned commercial in the "Back Room" and I had to quite. I have no idea where it ranks these days. We saw so many odd things. For instance friends setting up arguments just to get everybody going, groundless accusations of being unfair, we even had a few open multiple accounts just so they could argue with themselves. One fella made a mistake and took animal illegally, got some heat for it, turned himself in to the Game and Fish. A few months later he ended his own life. We always wondered if it was from the heat some of the other hunters poured on him. We stopped it on our board, but members of other boards never quite.

Kudos to Pete for setting up OWF and everyone on here for making this one of the rare places on the interwebs to stay on point. Not to be melodramatic, but I cherish it.

I also am thankful for being able to have met a few OWF members in person; not surprising Willys people are great. Hopefully, more of us will be able to meet in person one day.

Until then, I am grateful for all of you (and especially Pete) for making OWF what it is.

This semi-anonymous world brings out the worst in some people.

I used to regularly visit a musicians forum, which I found very helpful, but the crazy got worse and worse. Some guy posted a Christian-themed statement where he was clearly fishing for argument. He got it - profanity laced rants, accusations of pedophilia, etc. I objected to the tone of things and asked for civility. To no big surprise, they turned on me and told me to leave if I didn't like it. So I did.

A good forum (like this one) is an amazing source of information. Imagine (or remember) tracking down rare parts with major-city phone books and a land line!

Thanks to those that keep this place nice!

I like to save my arguments for objects that can't talk back; nuts i cant reach, rounded off bolt heads, etc. i love it when a neighbor walks past my house and wonders why someone is cursing yet there's nobody there!

With the discovery of a cutoff wheel for my angle grinder once stubborn bolts aren't nearly as difficult as they once were. .... "don't want to come off, fine I'll cut your head off and get another bolt". :)

I have to thank all of you for making OWF what it is. With just a little cat-herding on my part, and dropping the ban hammer on the occasional troll that won't play nice... Livin' the Dream.

Back in the days when rocks were still soft (about 2000) I was a regular on the Ebay help boards. It was a whole different trusting world then where clicking a persons ID brought up their contact info. including their home address. By regular, I mean I spent WAY too much time there helping people which eventually got me a trip to San Jose as part of a group of selected people (Voices-23) to participate in a group roundtable with ebay executives and the privilege of meeting CEO Meg Whitman. I'm telling you that to tell you this. One day a "lady" came on the boards to complain about losing her dying aunts last wish to a last second bid with no time left to rebid.
I won't get into the details of proxy bidding, but high bid wins. Period. Then it came to light that a glance at her last auction bid on was a Charles Manson audio tape. Many weeks of mayhem later, she had interfered with everyone who posted to that thread and lots of others on the page just to be malicious. She signed people up for all sorts of spam sites and porn sites, shutting down a lot of sellers and driving some out of business with full email inboxes. It continued for months. Ebay would shut her accounts down as soon as she got reported, but she would just use a free email service like Hotmail and be back within the hour with a new ID. Usually with something pertaining to Charles Manson. Her most used one would be a version of Crazy Charlie 21. It escalated to death threats and the FBI was brought in. I had a friend there from St. Louis who had gone with me to San Jose. "Englandboy" He had to got to her court date and sign a NDA. She went away for good as far as I know. Everyone created a posting ID to protect their selling ID, and ebay changed their set up to make the user personal info. private as it is now. The boards were never the same, ebay stopped wanting input from regular users, and changed CEO's and stopped promoting a "Community" spirit.
It just takes one truly crazy person to ruin it for everyone. It's great to have a friendly site like this to visit and share our hobby with like minded people. I also have a 1967 Ford Econoline pickup project. I joined a ford forum once and got roasted for no reason. Every question I asked was flamed apparently because I was new to the forum. I quickly left and never returned. I have no idea why people would think they can run a successful forum without new members. Let's keep it friendly and helpful and do ban those who just want to pick a fight. There are plenty of the "Other" forums for them.

Awe shucks, I thought all the nice folks here was cuz the ods were high that an owner of this type of Willys, also owns some sorta firearm.

Kidding aside, reading builds and seeing what others are up to has been very motivational to keep me plugging away at my project.

Great forum with a great bunch of guys n gals.

Thank you Pete and others who help him moderate.

I might be miss reading the intentions, forgive me if I am, but lets not go negative here. Please remember Larry and I and lots of others here live in Arizona which is not that far removed from the wild, wild west. We've been packin' or years. My outdoor experience includes a debate, "Do I bring the 38, the 45 or the new to me 32-20." Then there's the M1A I haven't fired yet. :) I grew up in New York (By Canada) where handguns, for most people, isn't an option.

I was not intending to be negative in my comments in any form. I have actually met a number of members from here in person. They are as genuine in person as on here.

I live in California where people vote out of fear and ignorance on every gun control issue that comes into play. I will not bore you with details. I own guns for recreational shooting. I own black powder guns as well as California politically offensive black guns that I have neutered to be able to continue shooting them at my favorite ranges. Guns are considered camping gear to me. (I want a canon next)

I mentioned the guns in light hearted humor intending to point out the lack of accountability in this identity free cyber space. I know it has nothing to do with the intentions of members here. I have bought, sold, and bartered parts with members here. I attend social gatherings with members from here. ( Tom's Farms, Wrightwood, Moab someday) I even visit an OWF member to gather inspiration from his sectioned TJ Rubitruck and his running TJ Rubiwagon. We even drink Coca Cola with no booze in it. I follow several OWF members on Instagram. I feel fortunate to have found this forum.

I hope you did not take my humor as negative. If so, my bad, sorry

From one owner of mulitple firearms to another, if it was my "You were kidding?" response that has led anyone to thinking negative intentions were implied, they are misreading the thread... ' kind of funny to me concerning the thread Subject.

Sir,
That is how they were received by this poster.

To keep this post on track, I completely agree with your original statement, Hedgehog, "This board seems to be an exception."

This is a good group and a good place to gather.

Regards.

Im a relative newbie here, but if I could add my little story: Internet forums helped me meet people and got me into four wheeling about 16 years ago when I got my license and a 1992 YJ. It was a forum much like this. No member dues, no requirements, just chat and, if you want to, show up to some wheeling trips or meet and greets. Mostly good people. But then they instituted memberships and dues and before long the politics were more than I could bear. It turned me off to internet forums. When I was thinking about getting my Willys, of course I needed (still need) information and, long story short, I'm very glad to have found a spot as welcoming as this one. I'm never afraid to post for fear of ridicule and I've even met a few great people AND been given a part I needed. Thanks to Pete and everyone here!

I have found one other 'safe' forum. The Farmall Cub tractor forum. I guess it's not surprising they are a rather easy going group. :)
