Clutch problem. Finally getting around to tearing it down. I'm not most experienced mechanic, but I got a willing neighbor to help (and it doesn't work at all now so I can't mess it up too much)!

Dropped the transmission and got the clutch out. Evidently there should be a spring in each hole. Any recommendations on where to purchase the new parts?

Whatever you do, Don't buy a clutch made in China. I would throw in a used American clutch before I put in a new Chinese one.
Did the disappearing spring score the flywheel? If not, and the pressure plate is in 1 piece, I would buy the disc and a new throwout bearing and slap it together.

No scoring and I've already ordered a 4 piece kit. Didn't pay attention to where it was made. I went through one of the venders from here. I'll take a look when I get it. Thanks.

Ok, finally got the new parts in! Now to just find the time to get it done!

Been a hell of a year. Finally got the clutch in and got her running today. New (to me) tires. Had to ‘make’ a bracket for the alternator.

So, changing all the fluids. Got the oil and both differentials done yesterday. Did some research (glad I did) and discovered I had the wrong gear oil for the transmission and transfer case. Going back to NAPA for some GL-1 today.

Couple photos of the motor. It’s had a bit of ‘aftermarket’ help! After changing all the fluids and topping off, got a couple puddles of gear oil from the transmission this morning. I don’t think it’s bad enough to tear it apart and replace the gaskets just yet, but I’ll keep an eye on it (any recommendations would be accepted).

Next “fix” on her will be a complete re-wire. There is a short somewhere and the wiring is just a mess.

Taking a short trip to the desert this afternoon to enjoy freedom!

Found the ‘drain’ that was causing what I referred to earlier as the short. It was the voltage meter......disconnected that and no more drain.

One side was running straight to negative terminal of battery and the other side runs to the alternator, can anyone confirm this is correct?

Next question, the steering column is hollow and has a home made dip stick in it, supposed to have some kind of fluid? I did find the plug on the steering box and added grease......

Well, this happened. Replacing thermostat housing because it was leaking due to corrosion, 2 bolts broke off......

There are some good youtube videos on extracting bolts. Some ideas I have not had or tried yet. At least you have part of the bolts sticking out of the block to work with. Good luck!

Thank you. I watched a couple of them and am fortunate enough to have a neighbor with a welder (and part of the bolts sticking out). We were able to extract them without too much trouble and no damage to the block.

For those keeping up with my work on the ‘52, you know that in November I posted about rigging a bracket for the alternator. It worked OK, but the neighbor and I weren’t really happy with it. So, found an alternator bracket from an old Chevy, took a motor mount from an older Chevy and made a ‘new’ bracket for the ‘52! Bolted it to the block where the old generator mount was!

Started on some re-wiring today. Got new gauges (Equus) and the new light switch is on the way. Also, putting in a fuse panel. Until now all the hot wires have come directly from the battery, ignition, or ‘kill’ switch.

Sometimes it’s the little things. As part of my re-wiring I found out the two lights in the engine compartment still work (just need to run power) so while cleaning up the pull switch, I found that it makes with a ‘W’. Not sure why I find it so interesting, but I do.

Wiring done, gauges in and working, except for the speedometer. Having issues with the cable.......but what fun would it be if I didn’t have something to work on? Got a few minor things to straighten out with the wires and then to overhaul the carburetor!

D7A1FFBA-9F55-4FA6-B745-3655A4BFCFAA.jpegSo, been a while since I had time to work on her and she was running pretty good. Then the starter went out. Pulled it today and opened it up.....pretty sure that wire should be attached to something.

Forgot to take a picture before installing the new starter, but here it is. Stopped to take some pictures during a little drive through the desert with my bride.
