Alaska or Rust 2017

Hello everyone just a little update on the wildfires we are having here in British Columbia. As it stands now there are just over 200 fires burning my last check says the towns along the Alaska Hwy are not under any evacuation order. Next week I will give an update on fires and fuel stops from Fort Nelson BC to Whitehorse Yukon. Regards Joe

Well thanks for blowing by me near Madison Wisconsin and not getting back to me on my offer of assistance. Happy you needed no assistance, but I would have liked to have seen the caravan and chatted with the rest of the gang when you stopped in Madtown. I don't think you are a real Willys guy. Willys people are friendly.

Actually we pulled an all nighter wrenching in Madison with a real willys guy

2nd the request for updates.

Never mind I found the blog and read through it. Cool trip - how many Willys (pre the modern JK "willys") made the entire trip - or are making the trip under their own power vs being trailered? It looks like the primary blogger is Trailering/towing his most if not all of the way.

What grenaded on the wagon to take it out of the event?

I've just been busy catching up, I'm self employed so this has been an expensive endeavor.

My wagon didn't make it all way, we had to throw in the towel south of Saskatoon. It was a new rebuild that turned out to be a mistake altogether. Basically the intake and exhaust valve seats weren't properly done, we had to adjust them daily, pull an all night lapping and then we removed the motor, found a machine shop and added hardened seats in Canada and miraculously managed to get back on the road, only to develope a nasty rod knock and no oil pressure within an hour. Obviously the shop that had it didn't get everything cleaned out.

I was the only guy would didn't trailer, with an original motor, so maybe I was asking for it, but I would and will do it again.

We met allot of fabulous folks who really put it all out there to help us on the road and that is the reward for me!

The Canadian tow truck driver wouldn't take a dime. A customer of mine arranged the freight from ND border and another pilot friend comped us airfare home.

Really the whole town of Estevan SK was instrumental in our last ditch efforts, but ultimately it wasn't meant to be. We were given a bay in a diesel shop to work in, cars to use, meals, laundry and more favors tools & parts than I can comprehend.

We stayed along the way and wrenched nightly with the Sheets family at Midwest Willys, Joe D in Madison and Chris McKay in MN.

I'm pulling the motor and having an autopsy, but I'll probably just rebuild the original one with the right guy and park it until I finish my truck project, I've sold the jeepster so it's gone soon.

It was a valiant effort.

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

I have to tell you Mike, you are quick to attack here. What you did not know is that there was no caravan coming through Madison, just us. There wee people a couple days behind us as well. We had major mechanical issues and needed to get to the designated shop right away to fix it, so we really did not have the time to stop and chat.
