My 1957 L6-226 Wagon Build.

That's in awesome shape! If I only had the room[emoji30]

I won't fit in the pickup cab. I am too tall. If I did I would find a way to drive it home....

I hear you there. I'm 6'6" and barely fit behind the wheel of a Willys truck. It wasn't as tight as my 1930 Ford Model A pickup, but close. Guess an extended cab is on the wishlist...

If you guys go to Wyoming from the east I did a great road from Kaycee, WY over the Bighorns to Ten Sleeps. A little pavement at first and then some fantastic stock Willys wagon roads ovee the mountains. While we were in a modern rig we were in 4 low and first gear to manage the steep grades coming down the front range line. Elk, Antelope, deer and all that. Pretty awesome.

Ok enough future Willys trip planning content. Here is a license plate lamp test from right before I left.

How did you resolve the broken manifold problem? I am afraid to remove mine since I know that they are fragile.

I had it brazed at a specialty welding shop here in the kc area. I also found a second one. If this one breaks I will build my own exhaust manifold.

Update - I finally broke down and installed the cigarette lighter and wired the heater switch. While I was at it I changed the LED bulbs in the speedo out for the good old Edison style bulbs.

Sorry for the dark picture.

I don't have a pocture of the heater fan blowing but just imagine the heat blowing well at 75F outside temperature....

Simce my last real work update I have completed the 2000 mile oil change per the manual and lube the thing a few times.

Next up will be new pinion shaft seals on the axles and at some point a transmission job as the synchros are on their way out. The one item I didn't overhaul wants attention..... I will most likely rebuild my spare set and then swap them out and move the overdrive over.

Otherwise, I have been driving it all over.

My lighter does not work. Did you replace with an new one? Rewire an old one? I've never followed the existing wiring to a source.

My wagon had the block off plate in place of a lighter. I purchased a 1954 chevy truck lighter from lmc because the knob is roughly the safe size as choke and lights but convex vs concave. It fits and works well. I ran my own wire to the acc terminal of the ignition switch.

Great info. I'll take a look this week.

September 17th update. Its been awhile. The wagon now has 3780 miles on the clock since it went back into service. For the most part everything has been good. The generator started acting up so it was replaced with an alternator upgrade.

While it is no where as cool looking as a Mopar Alternator or a Generator it works and didn't require any system modifications to install with the stock harness. I did add a heavy guage battery cable from it to the positive terminal on the starter relay. 13.6 volts at idle, 14.5 volts rolling down the road. My lights are much brighter at idle.

The transmission has been grinding going into second regardless of clutch adjustment so I decided to pull the synchro out and take a look today.

Top off.

Synchro dog springs not installed correctly. If it matters. Both sides were this way.

2nd gear - the bushing looks and feels like a new bushing.

So now I need to read up on all of this to figure out if my parts are worn. Everything else in the transmission looks really good. The reverse idler is snug on its shaft and the teeth look new. The cluster gear looks good. I just need to read up on this thing a bit.

Once this is complete I will be upgrading the engine oil filter to a Fram F4 housing I also found gl-4 gear oil in a variety of places - which is more brass friendly and Have a slew of axle and transfer case seals to install.

More to come. Does anybody else smell gear oil????

Yep, it will go back in that way too. The transfer case is resting on the the parking brake crossbar.

Lile the body swap I like to get creative with the repairs.....

Its Friday night, well actually Saturday morning early. Around 9pm I was kind of bored and not ready for bed so I loaded up my parts and headed for the barn to start transmission/transfer case reassembly.

First up I got the shaft reassembled with the new synchro and second gear. Snap ring: Check.

Then I fished all 13 needle bearings out of the transmission from the input shaft.

Kidding - I actually got all 14 out. Bet I scared/tricked a few of you! In the picture above one is hidden under a pile of three. I tripple checked.

I cleaned and then greased (tranny assembly grease) and installed the new needle bearings.

Then it was go time. Rebuilt shaft back in.

Everything went back in pretty easy. I also put a new gasket inbetween the trans and transfer case ( along with the "T" plate to lock the shafts.) Finally I reinstalled the transfer case.

After that I added some MTF fluid for anti rust, covered the top with a rag and called it a night.

More to come Sunday. Back to harvesting corn tomorrow.

Looking good. Gotta love the simplicity of it all. When I get done resealing the Dauntless, I'll be off to do what you just did.

Corn Harvest complete. Back to our regularly scheduled program.....

Cool pics Ben. There's a couple of old boys up the road from me that have an old Gleaner like that. They harvest with it every year. I love the old Chevy also but I like all old trucks. How many acres you put out? We haven't had any good rain here for a while. My boys corn is just dying instead of drying down. He is going to start chopping tomorrow.

Hey Frank - we have about 25 acres in corn, 10 in beans, 25 with 6 angus on it and 40 in grass for hay. Plus our regular day jobs....

* Non photographic update. *

Everything is back together and the grinding into 2nd is gone! Unfortunately it now pops out of second on deacceleration unless you hold it. When I feel like it I will try a few things. But for now I will hold it in gear when coasting. Odd that it never had this issue before with the original parts. It was nice to drive it again.
