"48 engine needs to be rebuilt. Car was completely finished when it decided to quit. How much needs to be removed to make removal easy ? Also the speedometer gear won't connect in the transmission. What needs to be done to fix ? Thx, tomc5
 
What happened? How did your engine quit? Some diagnosis is in order before you pull. Could be made to go again.
If you do need to pull the engine for a rebuild you can remove as much or as little as needed. Fundamentally just disconnect all wiring, exhaust, fuel lines/linkages & vacuum line, remove anything in the way, like radiator, grill, air cleaner. Pull engine. Or additionally remove all engine externals, gen, starter, carb, dizzy, etc. Then pull the engine.
