I loaded the rig, walked to Napa across the street to get a new bottle of oil. After that we loaded ourselves and headed for Buffalo Bill's house. - sorry no photos.

We rolled west on hwy 30 through Hershey, Paxton and on towards Ogallala, NE. There we would turn NW and head for the North Platte

It was cool and fantastic out, but the sun had a bite to it.

At Ogallala we headed for Lewellen, Oshkosh, and Bridgeport. One of my favorite Sinclair gas stations is there - its a must stop.

Lale McConaughey was pretty full.

In 40 years I have seen highs and lows on the lake. I slept through awesome windstorm on the shore in a tent once. The tent was repeatedly flattened on me all night long. I was dry but battered, and the wind sounded like a freight train repeatedly. My inlaw in the pup tent was worse for wear but he slept it off.

My favorite farm - when I was a child the old man kept it meticulous and neat. Now the barn is a house and the grainery is boarded shut.

We drove over to Ash Hollow park and Windlass Hill to see the Sod house. A little worse for wear but a family favorite.

The scenery was slowly changing as we headed NW. It was also getting hotter....

They are a lot bigger up close.

After the must stop Bridgeport Sinclair station. We headed for a flyby of Chimney rock. One of my favorite landmarks. I have a painting of this in my living room so that adventure is only a look up drom my La Z Boy in the winter.

After lunch we head down to the visitors' center; its mostly bare for an pending rehab - why do they spend money to change the displays cases and wall color around the same story and artifacts!

By this time it is more than hot out. Every dose of ac. Is great but a double edged sword.

We roll on through Torrington, Lingle and into Laramie Village (Renamed Ft. Laramie) for the actual Fort to the south. I love the old Raymond Burr radio show, I have been coming here since prior to a year of age. It is a must do and take the 1-2 hours to do it right.

Day 3 continued - Tapatalk locked up for a moment... phew Day three would have been unwritten had it lost it.

From Ft. Laramie we headed on west towards Guernsey, WY. We gassed up and restocked on Juice and drinks. It was around 95F - 98F with 25% humidity. I love it dry, even in an oven.

We say a blackhawk carrying people.

0eba2076bcb65e3f92b82068649ed78f.jpg

We drove up a Loooooooong hill climbing out from Guernsey and with a 40mph tail wind finally got some vapor lock at 98F out. We got to the top and parked nose into the wind for a cool down. It worked and 20 minutes later we were headed north.

The next stretch show be our only interstate. We didn't drive it any different than a two lane road. 55mph - 60mph.

Douglas, WY for the night. 350+ miles today. We are cooked. More tomorrow. Take care.

I live in Bridgeport, currently spending time at my parents in Cody, Wy.. too bad I couldn't have seen you roll thru town!

Yep, I bought that for fun. I normally have a Yellowstone Park Plate on there but figured that would be pushing it with the tourists in the park and Willys Delay factor also known as "WDF" or "ED".
Thanks again for taking us along. Hope you soon get some cooler weather. Just noticed your wagon has a Wyoming plate on the front.

June 10th update

Start temp 68F - Douglas, WY.

This morning I went out and checked the trans gear oil as it has been weeping during the trip. It looks like it is coming from the vent or the shifter rails but it is hard to tell. I topped it off, had a 15 minute case of WDF and then got to loading the wagon. Once it was loaded we drove through Douglas on the way north.

V1 fuel anyone?

North from town you drive through some oil patch establishments and along a few coal trains.

We pushed on aimed for Gillette.

My trans weeps from the back of the shifter rails, too. There doesn't seem to be much one can do about; there aren't any seals back there.

I always look forward to your daily updates.

There are a couple of things to slow down the loss of trans oil. The breather can be raised one inch with pipe fittings and the trans lid
actually has an update that uses cup type plugs at the rear of the shift rails.....But, if you persist in extended highway operation at
or above 60 mph....The trans and TC oil will always find a way to seep out...Just enough to smell....

In the long run, I fixed my drivetrain seepage problem... I switched to a T5 and Dana 300.......BUT, my old truck was already hacked up
and modified by the PO...So, I didn't feel bad about my additional "upgrading"..

If the original smells and sounds are desired, upgrading isn't the way to go.

Thank you for posting your trip... Really enjoying the photos and comments... We just drove 4,800 miles from N/Los Angeles...Thru Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Yellowstone, Helena, Moore MT, Spearfish, Brookings SD and then to a little town near Minneapolis.... Everywhere from Cedar City Utah, north was so green....Just like a huge park.
We traveled for 14 days... May13 thru 27th....Weather was PERFECT.. Never over 80*....

Looking forward to more photos and comments...........So far, just excellent.

Where was I -

Driving north through the Thunder Basin Grassland we had a diagonal tailwind. It was getting hot and that didn't help.

We gassed up in Wright, and finished the drive to Gillette. Today would be a Marathon.

In Gillette we found a city park by the pool with shade setup the stove and made lunch.

While I was cooking a work truck shows up at 115ish on a sunday and starts paining the curbs with or without cars next to them. I quickly move the wagon out of spray range and the shade. We eat quickly as the paint smell is very strong.

We move into the downtown area which is empty and I spend 15- 20 hitting all the grease points.

After that and some fuel we continue north to Spotted Horse. Around Spotted Horse the winds shift to the NorthWest and the temps dtart dropping. It is getting nice out, but there is trouble on the horizon.

The temps continue to drop and we close all of the windows, only the cowl vent is open. It actually feels great.

Within 15 minutes the wife is cold so cowl vent shut and heat on.

The rain is near so I call a bathroom break at a rancher's railroad crossing. Its cold outside but exciting after the heat of the last few days.

We find a few spare spikes for the boys and continue on. The rain is near.

As we climb the temps drop. We hit heavy fog across the top so there aren't many photos. I saw a few crazy people in white cars with their lights off in fog so thick you could see 250ft or so. LIGHTS ON IN FOG!

380 or so miles on the marathon today.

More to come. Today is a rest, supply and laundry day in Cody.

Gorgeous pics! Glad you got a break from the heat.

Speaking of which.... As you know, I borrowed your idea to use the plastic jugs for storage in the cubbies under the seats. Saturday i discovered that the jug on the passenger side had partially melted and stuck to the floor. Apparently the muffler immediately below is a little too close. I spent a good part of the day Sunday rigging up a system to insulate it and the pipe under the passenger footwell, which is also much too close. Haven't had a chance to test it, but here's hoping it will result in a cooler cabin this summer.

My exhaust system appears to be a custom install purchased by the prior owner, and I don't think they got it quite right.

Enjoy the Cody area.

Glad you guys like it.

Odd about the muffler heat. I am running Walck's system with no issues - but I have tools on the right in craftsman underseat boxes and the coolant jugs on the left side.

Ben, thanks for posting your trip. It is epic!

How’s your mpg so far?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I can't tell you specifically because we stop a specific stops we know are good from years of making this trip regardless of level. Longest tank has been 120 miles or so, largest fillup around 8 gallons. At home I was in the 14mpg range. I have the plastic tank that only gives you 13gallons or so instead of 15 like the steel.

June 11th update

Woke up to mid 40s. Fan tas tic!

Hung around town, did laundry, swam in the indoor pool. Drove around a bit. Pretty laid back. A perfect rest day.

Tomorrow through next Monday are Yellowstone days. I doubt I will be able to update until then so stay tuned.
